(record review)BARE TEETH:”First the town, then the world”

Bare Teeth are 4 piece melodic punk hardcore band coming from Lille, France. Although the members of the band played in some other bands before, this is Bare Teeth first ep consisting of 8 songs of fast melodic punk hardcore heavily influenced by bands from 90-s such as Lagwagon, NOFX or Strung Out. But, the band sounds more modern like a crossover between A Wilhelm Scream and Propagandhi with some trash and speed metal influences. The lyrics deal with more personal stuff and they are all in English. The ep was mixed by Trevor Reilly from A Wilhelm Scream and he did a great job. Steve Rawles from Belvedere appears as guest vocalist. The music itself is highly energetic and it really made my day when I listened to this record and drank some beer. I loved every riff and melody of this ep, from the opening title track to the acoustic last song “Behind the Wall”. If you like your records to be energetic, melodic and fast, support Bare Teeth. This band is well known in the Japanese underground because they formed in 2003, hailing from Osaka. Despite many lineup changes they made quite an impact on the scene and this is their new album that came out after a little more than three years since the last one. There are twelve tracks on this album. The opener “Red Eyes” almost blew me away with fast energetic drums and anthemic chorus. I know that the guys never heard off each other, but this band really reminds me on Croatian hardcore punk band Fat Prezident, plus added some metalic parts in the vein of Propagandhi. The lyrics are in English and the themes are personal. The music converts nicely from fast California styled melodic hardcore punk to more complex post hardcore emo parts. The album is one of the greatest hidden gems in the underground scene that came out this year. Great stuff! Top songs:”Beyond the Ocean”, “Frozen Time”, “Rust”.

(strip)Dampyr:Sin Đavla/Pleme noći

Dampyr je u kratko vrijeme, uz Dylana Doga, postao jedan od meni omiljenih stripova. U ovoj prvoj knjizi nalaze se prve dvije epizode koje nas uvode u svijet ovog junaka. U prvoj, Sin đavla, upoznajemo Harlana Draku, čovjeka koji sa frendom koji se zove Jura, luta ratom poharanim područjem Balkana i glumi lovca na vampire varajući po selima kako bi sakupili nešto novaca i hrane. Sve se zakomplicira kada skupina vojnika pokupi Harlana i Juru i odvede ih u napušteno mjesto kako bi im Harlan pomogao u borbi protiv pravih vampira koji ih ubijaju jednog po jednog. Malo po malo, Harlan otkriva svoj pravi identitet kao Dampyra, mješanca čovjeka i vampira, čija je krv otrovna za vampire. Harlanov otac Draka je pripadnik nadrase vampira, Gospodara noći, koje se Dampyr zakleo uništiti i pronaći kamo je nestao njegov otac. U prvoj epizodi upoznajemo i Harlanove prijatelje, koji će mu postati stalni pratitelji, a to su bivši vojnik Kurjak i vampirica Tesla. Moram napomenuti kako se radi o izvrsnim stripovima koji su odlična mješavina akcije, horrora i nadnaravnog.

Druga epizoda Pleme noći vodi nas u grad kojem se ne spominje naziv, ali po svemu radi se o Sarajevu. Grad je pod opsadom sa svih strana, vojska granatira tržnicu i ubija snajperima civile(poznato je li?). U grad stiže Harlan i njegovi prijatelji kako bi pronašli Gorku, pripadnika Gospodara noći i osvetili se za događaje iz prijašnje epizode…Riječ je o akcijsko mračnoj ratnoj epizodi punoj brutalnih prizora smrti i uništenja.

Preporučam ovaj strip svima koji vole ovakvu tematiku, jer je stvarno fenomenalan. Ja se bacam na čitanje daljnjih epizoda, pa ću napisati ovdje svoje viđenje i mišljenje idućih epizoda. Mali kuriozitet:Pročitao sam da je lik Harlana Drake, odnosno Dampyra nacrtan po uzoru na poznatog glumca Ralph Fiennesa.
