(movie time)THE OLD DARK HOUSE(1932.)dir:James Whale

olddarkhouse

This Universal vintage horror thriller gem was produced by famous horror producer of that time Carl Laemmle and directed by none other than James Whale, known for directing Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, Bride of Frankenstein among other legendary movies.

On a hellish stormy night, six individuals get stranded in the middle of nowhere. Luckily for them, they stumble upon old dark house. There are couple of bizarre tennants there, old man and his sister, mad dumb butler Morgan and little by little, as the night drags on, all the secrets and the skeletons from the closet start to unravel.

Now, with all respect to modern horror, they just cannot make such atmosphere as in those old gems of the genre. Constant howl of the wind, rain, darkness and excellent acting led by the legend himself, Boris Karloff, best known as the Frankensteins monster, here playing scarred and half mad dumb butler Morgan. If you are looking for special effects , you wont find any in this one, but you will find excellent and twisted story based on the J.B. Priestley novel that I had not read, so I cant compare the movie and the book. If there existed a school subject called horror, I am sure that they would show this one as one of the examples during classes.
