(record review)SECOND TO SUN-“The Black”

Second To Sun are hailing from St Petersburg, another mighty band from the awesome Russian underground scene. This album is in fact re-release of their previous album, which was instrumental only, but this time the guys recorded the vocals and I had  a privilege to listen and review it for this webzine.

This record contains 10 songs of melodic post black metal with some groove metal influences and in whole it sounds really dark and dismal. The production on the record is awesome and sounds really mighty and takes you to some dark places whether you want to go there or not. Although the bio of the band says that they are like purveyors of groove post black metal, you scene purists don´t give up on this record because this is black metal pure with bleak and great atmosphere of despair, anger and depression. I loved “Region 13” being for me the best song on this record but I also loved “The Fool” and its rolling rythms complexity and some eerie background sounds making it sound awesome. All the other songs are also excellent, so check out this record you won´t regret it, cause it is a fine piece of Slavic metal.

This track takes you through the vast scandinavian forest, displaying its might and power as well as the beauty and stillness, by combining elements of a broad spectrum based on folk music and metal. It can be described as a miniature folk metal symphony, or the final encore of a scandinavian folk metal musical!

The release consists of a digital single and a video and is set to be released on May 18th, 2018.

As a staple to their live set, “Bills To Pay” is also the first track the band jammed on when they first got together. Recorded at Toronto’s acclaimed Phase One Studios (Rush, Alice Cooper, The Tragically Hip) and produced, engineered, mixed, and mastered by Murray Daigle (Neverest, Platinum Blonde, Serena Ryder).

Having released a demo EP – recorded in Massachusetts with former Bang Tango guitarist, Scott LaFlamme- and a live album in 2017, One In The Chamber is gearing up to release their debut studio EP – recorded at Phase One Studios with Murray Daigle at the helm – this coming summer. “Bills To Pay” is the first of what’s to come.
