(record review)DYECREST-“Are you not entertained?”(Inverse Records)

Dyecrest returned after hiatus in 2013.and I am glad we have them back on the scene, because this new studio album is out now on Inverse Records and I listened to it and reviewed it for this webzine.

The Finns had their ups and downs since their start in 2001. After Sanctuary dropped them from the label and a lot of blood, sweat, tears and hard work the guys recorded this album but then they parted ways with their original vocalist. Bjorn Speed Strid known from his work in Soilwork helped and recorded vocals as a guest to help Dyecrest on this album. Luckily, the guys found permanent new vocalist Mikael who fits in the band perfectly, so they finally rerecorded and remastered some songs and the album came out. It contains 13 songs of excellent melodic modern metal with some thrash and melodic death metal influences. The vocals on the album are very melodic, almost power/heavy metal and I loved the vocal melody lines. The song structures have so many melodic guitar hooks and anthemic choruses just made for singalong and I caught myself humming to many tunes from this album long after I finished listening. For me the absolute highlights of this album are “No Fear”, “First Born Angel” and magical “Nuku Vaan” sung in Finnish with guest vocals by Elisa De Boer. Legendary Piet Sielck also contributed on this album as guest vocals. If you are a fan of melodic and modern metal, this album is just made for you!

(record review)AFEWYEARSLATER-“Whatever”

This is a debut e.p. by AFEWYEARSLATER the band which comes from Budapest, Hungary. And it is an awesome release for a debut.

cover

This record contains 5 songs of melodic hardcore punk with a lot of skatepunk thrown in, done and played and sung with heart, soul and balls. The lyrics are in English language and more personal themed as I read them while listening to the record. The songs are short and in your face and the whole vibe of the e.p. just threw me nostalgically back to the 90-ies and all of the melodic punk bands that I listened to back then. This is a decent melodic punk release and I just can´t wait for the full length once these guys record it! Top songs: “Face it”, “Wanderlust”

(record review)SIRIUS-“Wings of Fire e.p.”

This is the debut e.p. by Sirius, from Athens, Greece. I listened to it and reviewed it for this webzine.

Sirius was formed in 2007. they practiced and made songs and brandished their skills by live concerts through the years. After setting some lineup changes, they released their debut e.p. This record contains 4 songs of melodic heavy metal with power metal influences. When I first heard the title track I immediately thought of Bruce Dickinson because the vocals reminded me a lot of the legendary Maiden vocalist. The song structures are in Maidenesque sphere and I can hear a lot of old nwobhm masters in the songs like for example Saxon or Accept and that is not the bad thing. Of course, Sirius collected the best from the old school metal masters and added to their songs something new and fresh without sounding lame or boring. “Shadow in my heart” holds the awesome guitar solo which I can imagine being chanted oooo ooo by the fans live. “The Last Angel” somehow reminded me of above mentioned Bruce Dickinson solo records. It is somehow in my opinion the most technical and rythmical song on the record and it also has a chorus made for singalong. “The Fury Within” is somehow in my opinion the hardest and most awesome song for me on this record adding strength to the great melody. Nothing new, but decent heavy/power metal.
