(record review)Burnt Tapes-Never Better(Lockjaw Records)

Burnt Tapes are melodic punk band from London, UK and they released their new debut album with Lockjaw Records. They call their music regret punk. I listened to the album and reviewed it for our zine to check out why. Read more here.

Never Better Artwork

The guys met in Athens, Greece and then migrated to London before they formed the band in 2014. This record contains 10 songs of melodic emotional punk with beautiful guitar work, awesome melody lines in verses and anthemic choruses ideal for hugging, imagining, crying, smiling, drinking or whatever you please. I love the dual harsh yet melodic sung vocals in the song structures. The songs are mainly in mid punkrock tempo but there are faster parts like for example in awesome Maybe I´m a Method Actor. If I must compare the music of Burnt Tapes to some band, I would say that they somehow reminded me of Austrian band Deadends which I love very much. The other thing I love about this band and record are the lyrics which are well thought and with interesting solutions and twists. Favorite songs: Don˙t Make Me Play Bocelli, Lost In Transit.

These guys have been around in the scene since 2010.and have seen some action playing and sharing stages with names like Trapped Under Ice on their European tour in 2017, Agnostic Front in 2015, Turnstile in 2015, European tour with Swamps from USA in 2016, Broken Teeth ,Backtrack, Leeway, Merauder, festivals Mighty Sounds in Czech Republic and Summerbowl in France.

emf band

Their version of hardcore is modern groove hardcore with a lot of breakdowns, metalic parts and aggressive mosh loving songs. I can almost hear Slayeresque parts in Wave for example being the most thrash metal inspired song on this record in my opinion. The album contains 12 songs of metalized hardcore with great production and the music of this band reminds me of a mixture between Prong and Machine Head even the vocalist sometimes reminds me of Tommy Victor or Robb Flynn with his voice and the way he sings. The lyrics are personal but there are also themes like human rights and as I understand, these guys are really serious about carrying their message through to the kids and also the people outside of our scene if possible. This kind of hardcore is really not my cup of tea, I love more punk influenced hardcore with more faster parts, but that is my taste. If you are a fan of quality modern hardcore with a lot of groove, grab this record, you won˙t be disappointed. Support your local scenes, because without that scenes there is no global scene.
