Second wave of Brutal Assault line-up is here! Powerful returns and three premieres!

We’re here with the second update for Brutal #26, bringing powerful returns but also includes three premieres! Among the returnees is Brazil’s most famous band SEPULTURA, black metal panzer-bestie MARDUK and one representative of ‘The Big Four’ ANTHRAX.

After whole 9 years we welcome on the brutal roster the death metal traditionalists BENEDICTION, followed by hardcore matadors TERROR, thrashers SUICIDAL ANGELS and I AM MORBID. There’s no Morbid Angel without Trey, but the morbid-duo David Vincent and Pete Sandoval will come to play “Covenant”. Together with “Legion” it’s the second death metal gem that Brutal 2023 will offer you.

The last three names are the festival’s first-timers! All three bands have a rather distinctive take on deathcore and prove how powerful a player can deathcore in the extreme scene be. There will be a slaughter under the stage, look forward to SIGNS OF THE SWARM, WITHIN DESTRUCTION and FIT FOR AN AUTOPSY.

(movie) Horror In The High Desert(2021) – there is hope for mockumentary/found footage!

Just when you think there is no more hope for found footage and mockumentaries, the vast sea of boring lookalikes and clones has expired its reign and there is a void. But, not anymore. This little movie, directed and written by Dutch Marich shows how can you make a good and creepy movie with little budget. Well, the movie is a mockumentary about disappearance of Gary Hinge(Eric Mencis), who was an experienced outdoor expert and vanished in the desert of Nevada. There are couple of interviewees like Gary´s sister Beverly, private investigator Salerno and couple of Gary´s friends who talk bout what could happen and we find out that Gary discovered something really creepy in the deep desert when he smelled smoke and stumbled upon a little cabin. Last third of the movie are videos of Gary´s last night and then movie turns into found footage run and scare action. The villain(s) look awesome that little minutes we see them on screen and overall atmosphere is ominous and hopeless, almost made me believe that really happened. The only illogical hole in the script for me was: someone drove Gary´s pickup truck on the other side of desert to fool authorities, but how did he or they get back to where they live, far in the desert? On foot? Anyway, this is a superb movie. Chilling and creepy. Recommendation.

(review) Blind Guardian – The God Machine (Nuclear Blast)

I loved Blind Guardian and their old school legendary back catalogue, until Nightfall…album, later on they became too prog with too riff soup songs that were too long and lost their anthemic value to epic prog metal and I found most of their newer albums pretty boring. But, lo and behold the new one is upon us and it is a step back to that old school glory days, meaning more aggressive sound, faster songs and their trademark power/true metal which made them so beloved in the first place. Hansi Kursch sings like he is back in Imaginations…era and most of all, here is quality songwriting at play. Opener Deliver Us From Evil is a straightforward warrior song with all BG qualities, fast riffs, superb melody and sing along anthem. Damnation is a dramatic song with choir refrain, wicked guitar solo and tempo shifts but not pretentious, rather practical. Secrets Of The American Gods is a song that I heard prior to album and it promised to be, despite its length, a nice addition to the band´s setlist for tours. A bit more slower, but hits you right in the eye with Neil Gaiman inspired atmosphere coupled with fantastic guitar work of Olbrich/Siepen. Violent Shadows is by far the hardest song, total thrash speed metal attack with double bass drumming and blistering speed. Life Beyond The Spheres is the song I personally don´t like, it is boring and too long and belongs to that part of Blind Guardian I am not too fond of, but luckily, album goes on. Architects Of Doom is for me another highlight on this album, again treading into thrash speed metal waters but retaining enough BG melody in chorus to counter all harshness. Blind Guardian gave us some of the greatest ballads, so this album also has one, called Let It Be No More. In my opinion, this one is not the same level as those ballads that went to become legendary, this one is average metal ballad, not memorable. Blood Of The Elves is another banger of a song, melting your face with sharp riffs and great chorus. Destiny closes the album in grandiose and bombastic style. Although there are couple of weaker songs, this is a strong album by German legends.
