(review) On Thorns I Lay – On Thorns I Lay (Season of Mist)

Death/doom veterans On Thorns I Lay released their new album with Season of Mist. There are only six songs on this album which lasts a little under 45 minutes long. What do we have here? The mixture of doom and death metal with occasional funeral doom thrown in the song structures. Sombre melodies, topped with growling and anguished vocals, rolling doom drums and atmosphere that sometimes meets death metal aggression but main and best part of this album are the melodies, main guitar hooks and melodies which get into your ear as a listener and make you want to listen to over and over again. Although some of the songs are long, there is absolutely no boring part in any second of this album, there are no filler songs, I can only imagine how this material sounds live. So, if you are into crushing doom/death metal go get this one.

NEW video clip from APOTHEUS (“Cogito” out from “Ergo Atlas” album)

Apotheus is a progressive metal band hailing from Portugal, known for their unique blend of melody and experimentation. From the beginning of their career, Apotheus has pushed the boundaries of the metal genre and defied categorization. Drawing from a wide range of influences, their music combines heavy riffs, intricate rhythms, and delicate melodies.

“The Far Star” conceptual album garnered critical acclaim and cemented the band’s place as a story-telling metal act. “Ergo Atlas” is a direct sequel, and has continued to evolve their sound, experimenting with new musical techniques and incorporating a variety of influences. Their sound roars with passion and dedication, enveloped with a thick mantle of epic sci-fi story as a solid background.

“Cogito” is a memorable and thought-provoking song that explores the dilemma between living a life of pain or accepting death. It’s the most philosophical song of the album, and its name, taken from the famous philosophical proposition “Cogito ergo sum,” perfectly encapsulates its central theme.

The song’s intro is particularly noteworthy, building up gradually and smoothly in a way that is unlike anything the band has done before. As the song progresses, the music becomes more urgent and intense, with a memorable chorus that emphasizes the emotional weight of the lyrics. The vocals are forceful and emotive, capturing the pain and desperation of the philosophical struggle at the heart of the song.

The band began in 2009 under the name of Kinder Voss. During the recording sessions for the debut album “Tales of the Spanish Kings” a concept album similar to the early days of progressive rock. Due to touring conflicts with the international line up of the band, the band came to an early end. Jump forward to 2021, songwriter M Hopkins revived the project and recording sessions began again with Dutch fusion guitarist Timo Janse on guitars and M Hopkins on keyboards.

In the spring of 2022, the album was finished and Tilburg was selected as the band’s new name and “Tales of the Spanish Kings” was released.

Influenced by the greats of the past such as Keith Emerson (ELP) and Rick Wakeman (YES), the album reflects many of the unique qualities of ’70s progressive rock, but features an influence of harder modern guitar and electronic sounds of today. The goal of the album was to bring a new progressive rock sound along with honoring the greats of the past.
