(column)THE GODFATHERS OF HARDCORE

I love music documentaries. Especially, when they deal with one of my all time favorite bands, namely Agnostic Front from New York.

These guys have been around since the early 80-ies becoming the epitome of New York hardcore punk scene.

DE1000

When I was a kid, I learned about hardcore punk through bands like Biohazard, Sick Of It All, Life Of Agony and on the back of one Biohazard t-shirt, their guitar player Bobby Hambel wore a hat or a t-shirt with the title Agnostic Front, so I thought to myself, cool name for a band, it can`t be bad when Biohazard Bobby wears their shirt/hat. I was a kid with wide eyes exploring for me every day growing hardcore punk world.

Then Madball˙s first record Set It Off came out and there was that famous Dynamo 95. special episode of Headbanger`s Ball, hosted by Biohazard themselves in which they interviewed Madball ant they talked with pride and respect about AF. I went out and got myself the Last Warning/United Blood AF cd with their last show and I was stuck with the power impact of hardcore force in the music and the lyrics. Couple of years passed and AF re-formed, Something´s Gotta Give album came out and upon hearing that album in combination with their older songs I became total fan and they had so great influence on me and my hardcore philosophy that they made me a better man I am today. Their songs were with me through both good and bad times in my life.

Now, this movie came out, I long awaited to see it and I did see it yesterday. It tells the life story of AF through life, eyes and philosophy of two main men, the singer Roger Miret and iconic guitarist Vinnie Stigma. It made my heart warm to see how simple these guys are, how they still live what they sing about although both in their late 50-s/early 60-s. I read Roger˙s book a while ago, so I knew the kind of hard life he had with abusive stepfather and why he rather chose to live in the streets, so the music saved his life in a way. Stigma is also one of the most sincere, friendly and larger than life characters in the hardcore punk scene. This movie made me nostalgic, inspired, touched, heartwarming and only tightened my strength and resolve to persist in doing fine work to improve our beloved scene.

(movie time)DR PHIBES RISES AGAIN(1972.)-Eternal love with Vincent Price

I love horror culture and horror movies and one of my favourite actors and eternal inspiration is the late, great Vincent Price. I saw almost every movie he starred in and I am gladly returning to many of his works. This time I watched the classic sequel to Abominable Dr Phibes about mad and scarred doctor Anton Phibes(Vincent Price) who was left scarred monster after the horrrible accident in which his beloved wife Victoria perished. In the first movie, Phibes tried to exact revenge upon the ones whom he thought responsible for Victoria´s death. Assisted by his faithful aide Vulnavia, he managed to kill his opponents in many ingenious traps.

In this sequel, Phibes searches eternal life in Egiptian ancient pyramid and scripts to bring back Victoria to life. Police searches for him and he lays his traps again ready to fight until the bitter end.

This sequel is in many ways inferior in storyline to the first movie, but it is still a pleasure to see Vincent Price as Dr Phibes. In both movies Price doesn´t talk at all, he only acts with his face gestures and you can see all of his emotions, pain, anger, madness in his eyes and lips and gestures. His voice is only a recording. There are those creepy scenes again with Dr Phibes´s clockwork wizards, meaning his clockwork band. There are some illogical parts of the movie, the other actress starring as Vulnavia compared to the first movie and is Vulnavia also robot? Is she human at all? I think that Saw franchise, especially the first two movies found a lot inspiration in Dr Phibes movies, especially the first movie, considering death traps. In comparison to Saw movies, these two are almost child movies. One more thing that I must also mention is excellent and somewhat bizarre soundtrack in Dr Phibes movies and poetic and beautiful ending in both movies, telling us that love never dies and with strange aeons even death may die.

(horror movie)THE BABADOOK-Psychological drama cleverly packed into horror

Hallucinating beautiful  piece of horror movie. Dreamy and melancholic. These are only couple of descriptions used to describe and experience watching Australian masterpiece.

Mom and son live together after the tragic accident in which father was killed. Mom fights insomnia, depression and nightmares at night and during daytime works in an nursery home and tries her best to cope with son Samuel and his behavioral problems. Loneliness prevails and sorrow is a constant until Samuel brings home the book for kids about the creature called Mr Babadook. Strange things begin to happen and the border between reality and madness becomes more and more blurred.

This move is a psychological drama cleverly packed into a horror movie. Story about single parent trying to keep your mind sane in the life struggle of the modern world which crumbles around you. The gradation of the scary and absolute lack of gore and death make this one a true gem. Why? Because not many modern horror nowadays base their fright on an atmosphere, instead they only use gore and special effects along with cheap tricks. Essie Davis is great in the role of dismayed mother Amelia and Noah Wiseman played little Samuel awesome. I am sure that we will hear more of the director Jennifer Kent as well in the years to come. Great movie!

Perfect song inspired with the movie by master Argyle Goolsby himself:
