Back to back books with Pantera history, Rex Brown book vs Zac Crain book. Which is better?

I was really happy when I finally put my paws on the long awaited Rex Brown autobiography regarded as an inside story of Pantera. We all know Pantera. They were and still are one of the milestones and legends of American metal scene and worldwide extreme music scene.

After the years of success and extensive hard working tours and partying, the band broke apart and imploded in itself in 2001., with the final ending being brought with the tragic murder of Dimebag Darrell on stage in Ohio by a madman in 2004. Since the band was and still is a big part of me, because it was Pantera who brought me with a couple of other bands in my formative years on the extreme music  scene, I was eager to read how bassist Rex Brown saw all of the turmoil, music, heartbreak and tragedy.

Now that I have read the book, I am kinda disappointed. I was expecting to read the more in depth story about the whole thing and the whole story behind Rex book is very thin like some paper ready to float in the mist of memory. There are no juicy party stories included in the book, and I was expecting some knowing that Pantera was a party juggernaut in full sense of the word. Also, the whole breakup thing is kinda vague, like Rex really could not guess or knew not why did it happen. The one part of the book that brought tear to my eye is the part where Rex describes the funeral and in memoriam for Dimebag, the man whose loss still impacts the scene and me as a person a lot. Although the book is kinda let down, it is by no means something to avoid, so get it and read it. The fans of Pantera will be satisfied but for us who expected something like Nofx Hepatitis Bathtub book, we will be disappointed with this one.

The other Pantera book is written by Zac Crain and it is in fact concentrated on the life and times of Dimebag Darrell through his formative years as a guitar player and then with Pantera until his untimely death at the hands of a madman during the opening of Damageplan show in Ohio in 2004. This book has many more stories and fun but also emotions and was really nice to read it. It is not better then the book by Rex, but offers interesing side view to all of the road Pantera went together. What bothered me in this book was that it was way too much idealised and too subjective to read. Rex Brown book was much more objective although the guy was a co founder of Pantera and brother with these guys for the most part of his life.

In the end, the only thing for you remains to read both books and form your own opinion about the story of one of the biggest metal bands of all times.

I saw the new Star Wars movie-warning:spoilers ahead!!!

After the relatively different but not bad Episode VII: The Force Awakens and excellent expanded universe Rogue One movie, the time came for the Episode VIII:The Last Jedi and I was eager to see what will happen next in the Skywalker saga.

Two weeks ago I went to the cinema to see the movie and I am not disappointed. The people who read this zine know that I am big SW universe fan, having read more than fifty books from the expanded universe, whether the new cannon as Disney named it or the old SW legends universe. What bother me that they took a completely new road with the story not paying mind to the book storyline, where Chewbacca died a long time ago, where the Solos have three kids, the twins Jacen and Jaina and young Anakin. In the books Luke Skywalker and his wife Mara Jade Skywalker also have a son called Ben and there is no First Order, no supreme leader Snoke and least of all no spoiled emo turned evil Kylo Ren aka Ben Solo! For this boycott of the Skywalker book storyline I will forever hold grudge to Disney and Lucasfilm.

This episode continues right after the last one, with Rey reaches out to Luke Skywalker on the deserted island. Gotta admit that Mark Hamill looks like a tired hobo in the movie doesnt he? He is also depressed and tries all the time to be wise, but we dont know really why is he so angry. Meanwhile, First Order tries to kill the remnants of the Resistance led by Leia Organa. Here I must say one more thing thats been bothering since the last episode. What is Resistance? After the Rebels dethroned the Empire they formed the New Republic. What happened to that? We have seen the Starkiller destroy the Republic in Force Awakens, but what republic? Anyone who expects to have answers about forming of First Order and Snoke will be left with no answers. It was very heartbreaking to see Carrie Fisher as Leia for the last time. But her character has a decent farewell in the movie.

Laura Dern was decent, the ex stormtrooper Finn too. BB8 was more funny and reminded me of R2D2 very much. The action scenes were nicely done and time passed quickly watching the movie. Kylo Ren aka Ben Solo still has some of the most irritating facial expressions while he is angry and tries to be mean and evil. Snoke was right, he will never be another Vader. The movie is a mix of Return of the Jedi(see confrontation Snoke-Rey-Kylo in the throne room) and Empire Strikes Back(the attack on the Resistance base, planet similar to Hoth). The motto of this movie is that you have to kill the old and in with the new. I like that motto and where Disney is heading with this. Now comes the young Han Solo movie and then the closure in Episode IX. Who will live, he will tell!

Horror movie vs horror book battle vol 1:The Exorcist

This is the new category featured in my zine, and it is in my opinion the interesting one. I always love to ask people from the horror scene, which is better, is it the movie or is it the book upon which the movie was based.

This first episode we will talk about The Exorcist. I believe that every self respecting horror fiend saw the William Friedkin classic movie at least once in their lifetime. There are two sequels and a prequel, also two seasons of the tv series but we will keep our minds on the first one. Many dubbed it the scariest horror movie of all times, which is in my opinion much overrated, because for me The Sentinel and for instance Omen or Burnt Offerings were a lot scarier than The Exorcist. The cast in the movie was awesome, especially young Linda Blair who became horror icon thanks to the role of possessed girl Regan and no matter where she starred afterwards she always remained equalized with this movie. The music and dark atmosphere of the movie were also awesome as was the great ending. So, that makes it one of the all time classics of the genre which will withstand every test of time.

Moving onto the novel. The late William Peter Blatty did not write and publish much in terms of quantity but this novel which I read last week was awesome and it managed to have the same dark and brooding atmosphere as the movie. The only thing that the book has and movie has not is wider scope of some characters who dont appear in the movie at all or are marginalized like Swiss housemaid and her husband, or detective Kinderman, who appears a lot in the novel. But it is normal that they cut that out in the movie to make it more fluent and interesting to the cinema goers focusing mainly on one storyline and avoiding the substorylines. The book has the same ending as the movie, so nothing changed like the movie makers sometimes do. Happily this one was not the case.

In the end, what can I say? The movie and the book are equally great and that just doesnt happen a lot, so after our first horror movie vs horror book we can say:

Horror movie 1:Horror book 1-the match was a draw!
