(movie) Abandoned(2022) – horror movie which is really not a horror

I remember seeing a movie of the same title a while ago which was a decent mindfuck horror movie, so I decided to watch what this one is all about, having read about it on Bloody Disgusting. Emma Roberts, John Gallagher JR and Michael Shannon star in this one.

It starts as so many already seen movies with young married couple along with their baby son buying house and learning that murder and suicide took place in that house years ago. They decide to buy it anyway, but as husband Alex(John Gallagher JR) is a local veterinarian works days and nights, wife Sara(Emma Roberts) suspects something dark is happening in the house and suddenly not being sure if she is insane or are there more sinister forces at work there. Well, this started as so many previous movies, couple moves in, weird things happen, their weird neighbour(totally indisposed Michael Shannon-actor that I otherwise like very much) and some ending better or worse happens. Game over. Movie done.

Well, this one is not really a horror movie and it is only packed into horror for selling it better, but it is instead a mellow drama. About depression which I can relate to. But, ending is so lame and totally wtf that I just laughed that I wasted hundred minutes of my life watching this one and waiting for something to happen. But nothing really happens. There is no peak, there is no conclusion, there is nothing. Emma Roberts is okay as Sara, there is absolutely no chemistry between and her husband as characters and her behavior in the movie is totally stupid. Not horror movie clichee stupid, only plain stupid. This one is nothing. No horror. No drama. Nothing.

(movie) Soaring Highs and Brutal Lows – The Voices of Women in Metal (2015)

I recently found this documentary and since I am a sucker for music documentaries, I said, let´s watch this one and see what this is about. Like in hardcore punk scene, metal scene is, I dare say even more sexist and misoginistic towards women and girls really had a hard time through couple of decades to succeed and be respected and recognized as artists equal and even better than their male counterparts.

This documentary talks about women, to be more precise women metal singers who talk bout their experiences and their accomplishments in the scene with their stories which are in many ways similar, yet different and inspiring, also beautiful. This one features Floor Jansen(After Forever,Nightwish,ReVamp), Alissa White-Gluz(Arch Enemy, Kamelot), Simone Simons(Epica), Doro Pesch(Doro, Warlock), Kobra Paige(Kobra and the Lotus)…What I love about this movie that it is told thematically telling basically same story from different angles or points of view at the same time creating similar story but told through the eyes of women who became such undivided part of the scene. I especially love the emotional part of Floor Jansen having suffered from burnout because I experienced something similar a while ago. Also, Alissa White-Gluz is one of my favorite singers, so hearing her story made me happy. What I always hated in the scene were flyers and adds or gigs which advertized ‘female fronted metal band’ or ‘female fronted hardcore band’-I mean, what the fuck is that? I always, always hated that syntagm which I find diminishing and sexist and I hope no one will ever use that again. Anyway, this movie was inspiring and fun to watch. So, if you have a chance, see it!

(movie review) Death on the Nile (2022) is a total utter failure!

I watched Kenneth Branagh´s rendition of Orient Express Agatha Christie classic couple of years ago and I must admit, although the movie had stellar line-up and promising to be a nice enjoyable experience, I felt disappointed and the movie was absolutely nothing to remember. Nice to see, but you forget it instantly after watching it.

Now, I was surprised how Branagh directed a ‘sequel’ which is loose word, having a new story, only incorporating character of legendary detective Hercule Poirot again and being a rendition of another great novel and I still remember the tv movie with awesome Peter Ustinov in the role of Poirot. He is still for me the best Poirot, although David Suchet played him decently in tv series. So, I was surprised how low can you go with this one. Starting with action in WWI? WTF? Explaining why Poirot wears his pride mustache?! The story moves from the mud drenched trenches to Egypt, where our hero enjoys his boat cruise along with newly wedded couple of rich heiress and her husband. Then murders start to happen and it is up to Poirot to discover and bring murderer to justice. Hmmm. The story is far from the novel and if you are into that novel, you will be angry for all the changes made in this movie. Also, line-up is again stellar, but only Gal Gadot was up to the task and I felt sorry and I was into her character and could relate to her somehow. Kenneth Branagh as Poirot just doesn´t fit to me, he somehow has no chemistry with character, somehow just becomes a parody of himself.

There is absolutely no tension in two thirds of the movie and it is just too long with to much slow parts when you await for the first murder to happen and that things somehow start evolving into crime story. I understand that they somehow tried to build up relations between key characters but that just did not work for me. The ending was somehow predictable and although they imagined it as kinda twist it was not really a surprise.

Conclusion: Just poor and it did not work for me.
