Dutch hardrocking metal band HVALROSS is coming out with their third and last song of 2023, and what a song it is!!  “HELIOS”, a rocking, melodic song with nice, harmonized vocals and a proggy midsection featuring guest keyboard player Jochem Brok!

Hvalross is a four piece hard rocking band, not from Norway as the name would suggest, but from the South of the Netherlands. The band saw first light in the spring of 2018, but the members have been rocking since they were teenagers in the late eighties. Hvalross wants to honour these times. The hard rock and heavy metal from the seventies and eighties therefore has a strong base in their sound and lyrics, supplemented with influences from contemporary stoner and heavy rock music. It is said that you can hear influences from Mastodon, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden. Expect the classic compact four-piece rock band, in a set up just like our heroes Black Sabbath, with melodic classic hard rock vocals over a rhythmic band. Heavy and monstrous like a walrus combined with an energetic stage performance.

In October 2020 Hvalross released their debut album ‘Cold Dark Rain’ on the regular streaming platforms. Because of the bands sentiments for the good old eighties, it is also released on ‘cold rain’ coloured vinyl. The album was well received and Hvalross got representation by Hard Life Promotion. Sadly, Covid did not make it possible to promote the album live and made original drummer Tristan decide to quit the band in 2021. Hvalross quickly got back in battle formation with our good friend and drummer Marc.

Continuing to unleash new music on the world, after “Running the Gauntlet” and “Mercenary Knight” it is now time for “HELIOS”!!

(movie) Thanksgiving(2023.) je uspio vratiti natrag taj duh slashera zlatnog doba 80-ih

Eli Roth mi spada u omiljene horror redatelje i scenariste. Jako sam se obradovao kada sam vidio da dolazi ovaj njegov povratak slasher podžanru horrora.

Film se događa, pogodili ste, na američki praznik Dan zahvalnosti za vrijeme kojeg se desi nezamisliva tragedija u jednom shopping centru malog grada. Godinu dana kasnije, brutalni ubojica s maskom Johna Carvera, prvog pilgrima, ubija preživjele kako bi se osvetio za ono što se dogodilo godinu dana ranije.

Klasičan slasher zaplet s uvodnom scenom i super napravljenim negativcem, killerom koji je brutalan i ubija likove na najrazličitije načine. Rasplet filma je malo jednostavan, ali svejedno efektan, kao i sam kraj filma, a nemreš fulat kada staviš legendarne horror punkere Misfits za soundtrack filma. Film obiluje gore scenama i to jako dobro napravljenima, napet je i iako traje malo manje od dva sata drži gledatelja prikovanog za stolicu.

Zaključak: 8/10 sjekira – odlične gore scene i duh slashera.

(review) As Friends Rust – ‘Any Joy’ (End Hits Records)

Legendary As Friends Rust are back with new release containing seven songs. What to expect here? Seven songs of excellent melodic hardcore punk like we are used to from this phenomenal band. There are some mid tempo emotional punk rock songs like awesome ‘Final Form’ but it is not everything in speed isn’t it? The said song has such nice melodic vocal lines, harsh when needed and melodic when needed, so sweet! ‘Positive Mental Platitude’ continues where the previous song left off being even better with fine written smart lyrics over fine tuned melody and energetic punk rock, melodic hardcore. ‘See Us Now’ is a clever mixture of rock and hardcore in one song, with gentle chorus and more harsher verses being thrown at you and adding some groove with melody. One of my favorites on this record is ‘Great Filter’ being a perfect combination of melody, aggression and punk sensibility. ‘The Walking Debt’ has harshest verse on the album evolving into beautiful chorus to make goosebumps upon your skin. Fastest straightforward hardcore punk song on this record is definitely ‘Origin Stories’, old school hardcore anthem, angry and energetic. One of my personal highlights is ‘No Gods, Some Masters’ which closes the album being perfect song. For sure, one of the best releases this year.
