(record review)The Brainiax-Rock N Roll Lobotomy(Batcave Records)

The Brainiax are just releasing their new record with the mighty Batcave Records. I listened and reviewed the record for our zine.

These guys are hailing from Portland and I must admit that I have never heard of them prior to this record. The music of The Brainiax can be described as psychobilly, leaning more heavily on the old school psycho bands like Demented Are Go, Batmobile and similar legendary bands. This record contains 10 songs of old school hard rocking psychobilly with some ska influences(Cape Fear), also, I can hear some doo wop rock n roll in No Way. The album is varied and in no way boring, with country influenced The Bastard Sun, for me one of the best songs on the album Devil Doll. Anyway, the best songs come in the last third of the album, namely Hideous Horrific and House On The Hill, being psycho hits for the new millenia haha. Good one.

Joey Cape’s brand new album, Let Me Know When You Give Up, is available for pre-order now! Out on Friday, July 5th, Cape’s latest effort is, conceptually, about giving up a losing fight. Even more so, it’s about quality of life, and abstaining from the madness that encircles our daily lives. Joey Cape produced the album, and it features contributions from Brian Wahlstrom (Scorpios/Gods Of Mount Olympus), Asher Simon, Neil Hennessy (The Lawrence Arms), Matt Riddle (No Use For A Name), and Zach Quinn (Pears).

The lead track, “I Know How To Run,” is a song Cape wrote about the current social debate and its divisive nature. “People seem more concerned with argument than the outcome,” he says. “The unwinnable fight defines some, but you don’t necessarily have to stay and fight. Leaving the conversation is a viable option. As a last resort, you can always run, figuratively or literally.”

Joey Cape will be touring Europe this summer and you can view those dates here!
