Folk Artist Amanda Gonsales Releases “Noite Morta” (Lyric Video)

Folk artist Amanda Gonsales enchants with the unveiling of her latest lyrical opus, “Noite Morta,” encapsulated in a visually stunning and emotionally evocative lyric video. “Noite Morta” is taken from the EP, “Sacro,” out via Wormholedeath.

“Noite Morta” (Dead Night) was composed on a cold night, during the winter of 2013, in Évora, southern Portugal. Its lyrics were written exactly in front of the Roman Temple, in a historic complex that also includes the Sé cathedral and the Palace of the Inquisition. The solitude of the beginning night presented me with this song, which on that day, didn’t even intend to become a song yet. Sometime later the melody came out, I can say it was through it that I dared to compose.”Noite Morta” takes me to this scenario, but also to other landscapes that it opens up and allows me. I’m entering. “Noite Morta” touches the cold, the loneliness, the rawness, and hardiness of life, at the same time that it opens us to a mystery, something that is always in suspension, and that carries us to some place where we feel extremely alone and at the same time connected. With all. It’s that place of solitude where we like to be, where at least for a moment we give thanks and realize that we are part of something that is beyond.
“Noite Morta” is also a prophecy of death, someone who comes to look for us, the irony that we imagine this great entity would have when it invited us to leave. “Noite Morta” is dark, ironic, deserted, sinister, icy, dense, ethereal, challenging, and peaceful as a last breath should be.”Noite Morta” speaks of our death. A surrender, where we let ourselves be carried away and be part of something much bigger. The peak, which makes us feel extremely connected with life.
Amanda’s artistic expression transcends conventional boundaries, as she invites her audience to embark on a multisensory journey through sound and stage performance, transporting them to realms beyond the ordinary fabric of space and time.

Hollowness:
“This was the hardest song for us to finish. We edited it multiple times and even re-did the whole song once. After all the trouble, somehow it became the one for introducing this project to the world. The lyrics were made from one of my older poems and adding some wider perspective around it. This particular poem was very personal to me, but somehow it was refreshing to update it now when my own mindset has changed a bit from the time it was made.”

Enough:
“This was the first song we did together and after this one the whole concept became much lighter. Originally we were supposed to do ”only” this kind of songs, but then we threw all genres to trash and decided to do what we wanted instead. I really had to go through a lot of practicing for the rough vocals, as I hadn’t recorded that kind of singing before. Also for that reason, waiting to finish this song in the studio was nerve racking for me as I was really insecure about my technique before the session, but somehow just a few weeks before, something clicked and I just started doing it right. All in all, I am super pleased with the outcome and can’t thank Jonne Soidinaho enough for making this one possible and giving me thoughts and teaching for different vocal skills.”

Wither:
“This song was supposed to become a love song, but somehow it (too) ended up being a sad story. We started making this instruments first and picked a lyric after some of the instrumental visions had already been recorded to the demo. In the lyric the love is obviously present, but also strong feelings about fear of rejection and looking up from depths before surrendering to completely new phases in life. This was also the only lyric where the original poem ended up completely unedited, just a little repetition here and there.”

Corrupt:
“This song will be the last song on the EP. It is a calm but a bit unnerving (in a good way of course) setting with more organic tones, acoustic guitar and I get to use the lower range of my voice. Lyric wise, it tells the story of self development and kind of self appreciation, when you find yourself in the lowest point of your road, you have to choose between destroying yourself by just laying in the fire or saving yourself by letting go of everything you know even though it will be the hardest thing you’ve ever done.”

Rioghan is a solo project performed by singer Rioghan Darcy. Rioghan was founded in 2019 and is based on Lapua, Finland. Rooted deeply in both gothic and progressive metal scenes, she sure should bring something interesting on the table. She started off in 2010 as a poetry and lyric writer, but in 2019 she finally wanted to add some more to the mix and decided to fleshen up some of her words with music. She teamed up with a few skilled songwriters and together they came up with a 4 song EP “Blackened Sky”.

Graduation Speech (mem. of Aspiga) released new music video!

dd4cb092-5934-461c-89d1-a8397420ca2c

In November of 2019, Kevin Day released his second solo EP under the moniker Graduation Speech. The project has been a vehicle to explore more acoustic and indie-rock soundscapes as opposed to the punk leanings of his band Aspiga. Maintenance Required expanded on the ideas found on Quiet and Calm by introducing layers of instrumentation and stepping further out of earlier comfort zones. “Small Apartment” might be the best example of this exploration. The chorus pulses with pounding toms and glinting accents, but each verse creates open space for acoustic chords and harmonic notes to breathe and bend into infinity. Now the song has an accompanying music video filmed by Brian Mietz and you can view it now at The Key (XPN). Maintenance Required is available both physically and digitally from Black Numbers. You can expect a new EP from Graduation Speech this April on Jetsam-Flotsam.

Bio:

Most solo projects seem to fall into one of two categories. First, there are those that resemble a simpler, stripped down version of the artist’s primary band—think John K. Samson, whose solo albums could be mistaken for Weakerthans records despite lacking the tell-tale guitar leads. Conversely, there are those projects that allow the artist to express a separate side of their musical identity than they can with their primary band—like Stephen Brodsky, who’s quirky solo songs contain mere shades of Cave In and Mutoid Man.

Graduation Speech, the solo endeavor of Kevin Day (who leads pop-punk grumblers Aspiga), some how fits both categories. On the project’s second EP Maintenance Required, Day takes his band’s songwriting approach and extends it in a more dynamic, more tender direction.

On 2017’s Quiet and Calm, Graduation Speech’s debut took the form of a quiet project that showcased Day’s saccharine vocals over simple, shuffling chords. But the first few beats of “Your Heart. My Lungs” suggests Maintenance Required will be more than another acoustic endeavor. Indeed, distorted electric guitar winds between Day’s scratching acoustic chords on this opening track and throughout the record, and light percussion punctuates each almost every measure. Drums thump on “Ourselves,” a song whose momentum bridges the gap between both of Day’s projects; likewise, both “Love and Patience” and “Shedding Myself” features a full drum set alongside a steady bass, a flickering electric guitar, even chiming piano, bringing these beautiful song to life.

Day succeeds at expanding Graduation Speech’s sound by adding, but also by taking away. The chorus on “Small Apartment” pulses with pounding toms and glinting accents, but each verse creates open space for acoustic chords and harmonic notes to breathe and bend into infinity. “Straighten me out when I lean into you / Straighten me out in the frames of your eyes,” Day sings, his acoustic snapping against the throbbing beat, a meandering piano melting into the sizzling guitar lead.

Maintenance Required shows a solo musician doing what he has never done before and what he can’t really do with his other band. More importantly, though, Graduation Speech manages to do what most solo projects cannot—that is, appeal to Aspiga’s fans while letting Day explore a more sentimental side of his songwriting.
