Classic 90’s/00’s Nardcore purveyors No Motiv are back with the original lineup that recorded their 1999 Vagrant Records Trever Keith-produced debut LP “And the Sadness Prevails…” to celebrate that album’s 20 year anniversary. The band will be releasing a newly mixed and mastered album with 2 additional bonus re-recorded songs. These will be available on a limited pressing of vinyl along with a digital version this October 2019. See vinyl pre-order info below.

Additionally, No Motiv will play a pair of 20-year anniversary shows in Ventura and Anaheim, CA this November. See dates below.

Drummer Pat Pedraza says, “So crazy, I can’t believe 20 years has passed. Time really does fly. Most of us have kids now which makes things totally different than when we first started this. It’s been really fun playing these songs again. Nostalgia is real…and I kinda like it sometimes.”

About No Motiv:

Have you ever heard of Oxnard? It’s a coastal city 25 miles north of Malibu and 30 miles south of Santa Barbara. Here are a few fun facts: Oxnard is the strawberry capital of California, it’s home to world-class surf spots, and hosts a world-famous punk/hardcore scene (Nardcore). It also happens to be where the band No Motiv originated.

What started out as two teenage friends playing punk covers at backyard parties, No Motiv quickly grew into a four-piece band with a sound they themselves for fun termed, “Sadcore.” With high school friend and fellow surfer Dave Brandon on bass and 13-year-old phenom Max McDonald on guitar, No Motiv quickly gained some local recognition by releasing a string of 7” vinyl records, demo tapes and soon after, a full-length record on local Oxnard label Edge Records.

They soon got the attention of Santa Monica based Vagrant Records (via the drummer Pat constantly mailing them demos and bugging them to listen to their new songs.) And so it goes, Vagrant signed No Motiv and put them in the studio to record the band’s first Vagrant release with Trevor Keith of Face to Face as producer.

Being fans of Face to Face, and having the privilege to record in a beautiful analog studio in Ojai California… for No Motiv, dreams were coming to reality.

“And the Sadness Prevails…” was the title they would give the record. Songs about nostalgia, growing up, friendships gone wrong, and heartbreak would cover the meat and potatoes of the album. With the release of ATSP in 1999, the band has proudly toured and shared the stage with bands such as Jimmy Eat World, Blink 182, MXPX, Face to Face, Alkaline Trio, and Dashboard Confessional to name a few.

Fast forward to today….No Motiv is back with the original members from the Sadness album to celebrate it’s 20 year anniversary. With that, No Motiv will be releasing a newly mixed and mastered “And the Sadness Prevails…” album with 2 additional bonus re-recorded songs. These will be available on a limited pressing of vinyl along with a downloadable version this October 2019.

With members of the band having families and work responsibilities now, they are still grateful to the past and present that made this release possible. Even though No Motiv wasn’t the biggest band then or now, they have always played with their hearts and integrity, never holding anything back.

Who knows, maybe the boys might write a couple new jams for a 2020 release?
We’ll see.

(News) Pop punk band Makeout announced line-up change and new members

Pop-punk phenoms Makeout, who took the music world by storm on the heels of their debut album, The Good Life, have ended the search for their new lead singer. Kyle Dee, formerly a Season 11 American Idol contestant, and lead singer of Chicago mainstays, The Frantic, will take charge of lead vocals and rhythm guitar. Also joining the band is bassist AJ Khah, who was previously a member of fellow pop-punk favorites, Sleep On It. Both members bring a wealth of experience to the band alongside Tyler Young (Lead Guitar) and Scott Eckel (Drums).

Earlier this year, former lead singer Sam Boxold shocked fans when he abruptly announced his plans to leave the band and focus on other endeavors. Immediately after, the band began an extensive worldwide search for a new frontman. Makeout utilized their social media channels and engaged with fans and potential candidates alike, to help find a replacement for the vacant position. The band received more than 500 submissions for the job. Over 30,000 fans voted, and Kyle was one of three finalists that received the most votes. After several interviews and rehearsals, the band unanimously agreed that Kyle was the perfect fit for the next chapter in the band’s career.

Kyle says, “I’ve been a huge fan of Makeout since the beginning, so for me, to get to step in and continue building on such a solid foundation is an amazing opportunity. I realize that I have some big shoes to fill but I’m up for the challenge and feel so grateful to be a part of the next chapter in Makeout’s story.”

“We are so pumped to officially have Kyle on board. We knew that when Sam left, the bar had been set pretty high. Kyle’s talent as a vocalist, writer, and guitar player has added so many new and improved dynamics to the band,” says Young. “From the moment we stepped into rehearsals with Kyle and AJ, it all just clicked and felt like we had been playing together for years.”

After building a local buzz, in 2014 the band ended up performing on the Massachusetts date of the Warped Tour and becoming a finalist in a Ernie Ball Battle of The Bands judged by none other than iconic GRAMMY® Award-nominated producer John Feldmann [blink-182, Good Charlotte, Sleeping With Sirens], who eventually signed them to a production deal. Makeout recorded their debut effort at Feldmann’s home studio in 2016 between dates supporting longtime heroes blink-182. Throughout this whirlwind, they collaborated with the likes of 5 Seconds of Summer’s Ashton Irwin and Calum Hood as well as legendary skinsman Travis Barker on what would become their 2017 Rise Records debut LP, The Good Life.

Accolades followed with more than 10 million streams to date, and Rock Sound labeling them “one of pop-punk’s hottest new properties,” and New Noise calling the album, “…a perfect blend of powerhouse power chord choruses and delicately picked, suspension building bridges.”

Makeout has already begun working on new material and plan to release a new single before the end of the year. They’ll also be playing a few select headline shows (see dates below) before they begin work on their sophomore full length follow up in 2020.

Additionally, the members of Makeout have decided to retire their song “Secrets”. Guitarist Tyler Young comments, “None of the current members of the band had anything to do with the writing or the decision to release the song, and we feel that it no longer represents who we are or what we stand for.”

New frontman, Kyle Dee, explained, “When we all initially got together, we looked back at the band’s past and asked ourselves, ‘who do we want to be moving forward?’”

The answer was simple. The foursome agreed that moving forward, they wanted to be a band that is transparent and conscious of issues that affect others.

“Our love for our fans and this scene as a whole has only grown through this transition period. We sincerely want to make a difference and we feel the best way to show that is by starting fresh and eliminating any past material that has hurt others or been a source of conflict,” says AJ. “We are just thrilled to get back to what made this band, and that’s undeniable music that can be enjoyed by everyone.”

Upcoming shows:

12/12 – Reggie’s Chicago, IL

12/14 – Alchemy Providence, RI

(record review) Strung Out-Songs Of Armor And Devotion(Fat Wreck Chords)

cover

Strung Out are back with a new record. Four years after the last full length the guys have a new drummer and new full length record for our listening pleasure.

These guys have come a long way from their skatepunk beginnings as they play now a metalic and technical version of skatepunk which influenced so many bands. There are 13 new songs on this record and my feelings are divided after listening to it a couple of times now. Some songs are really superb with a lot of catchy melodies and beautiful riffs in the song structures like for example Rebels and Saints, Under the Western Sky, Monuments or Hammer Down, but too bad the whole album is not like that. There are some songs in which Strung Out kinda slow down and take almost poppy approach to the songs, still staying too technical to be pop punk and too poppy to be hardcore punk. So, this album is of course a must for all the hardcore fans of the band, but it is just another record in the band´s opus, nothing to remember them by. It is better than the last one, but not as good as Exile in Oblivion for example. Still, there are more good songs than boring ones here.
