(review)No Sanctuary-Weird Slow Punk of Mystery and Imagination

a1875474266_10

No Sanctuary from Pamplona just released their new record. The thing about this band is they sound pretty original and different from other clicheed classical d-beat hardcore punk bands. No, they rather choose another way, mixing crust hardcore punk with darker elements of Celtic Frost, Black Sabbath, sludge and experiments of Amebix. This record contains 7 songs that are maybe a bit longer in duration but in no way boring. I love the dark atmosphere, slow rolling of drums in doom parts, the vocals ranging from shouting, chanting, almost gothic melodic singing, screaming and whispering. Also, I love when band uses samples in their music, No Sanctuary use samples very smart in their song structures thus making songs even richer with thick atmosphere. The lyrics are in English and in Spanish, from great ode to John Carpenter and VHS era(He Lives) to horror(Curse of the Werewolf) and for me the best song on this record, epic The Weaver in the Vault being Lovecraftian in atmosphere and lyrics. This is truely one of underground´s gems so go listen to this one.

(record review)OTHISMOS-Separazione

Everybody carries the dark side in themselves, so I am no different. There is a dark side that separates us from the others, Othismos do not care about the music boundaries with their darkened hardcore crust. I listened and reviewed their record for our zine.

I already wrote a couple of times in this zine, how I love and respect the vast and mighty Italian underground scene. Formed in 2009., Othismos were straightforward hardcore punk band in their beginnings. They evolved through the years of their journey in darkness and nowadays they play darkened hardcore with sludge and black metal influences thrown in. This record contains 8 songs and although some of the material has a lot of chaotic song structures, there is still enough dark atmosphere and vibe to make it pleasent like in Tale of a righteous man which is for me one of the best songs on this record. The lyrics are in English and Italian and the songs are perfect soundtrack to the apocalypse, to the end of this miserable world. What I love about these guys, is how they managed to combine the old school vibe of Negazione, Arturo, Crunch and other Italian hardcore bands with darkness and blended it into modern soundtrack to the armageddon.

(record review)DISBAJA-Time is…Cruel Master!

Finally, the second release by Disbaja is out now. I listened and reviewed this record for our zine.

Disbaja are crust/hardcore/metal/punk band from Zagreb, Croatia, although the members of the band originally come from couple of Croatian towns like Požega, Županja, Rijeka…The music has no boundaries, so it doesn` t really matter where is someone from.

Having some lineup changes, Disbaja parted ways with their singer, so that was a little setback in recording this album, but in the end, it turned out just fine with original guitarist/vocalist Atlija resuming the vocal duties, like on their first release.

The new record contains 13 songs of infernal metalised hardcore punk with crust and d-beat thrown in for good measure. The lyrics are a mix of poltical and personal, all of them in English. I just love how Disbaja emproved from their debut release. This sounds powerful and harsh, just the title track is in my opinion a perfect amalgamation of every band these guys played prior to Disbaja, all the music that they love, all their experiences, to form an apocalyptic soundscape. Personally, I am not avid fan of d-beat bands, but Disbaja is far from being captured into scene boundaries and fences, their music went far beyond that, evolving to apocalypse, but the kind we crave, delivering mayhem but providing catharsis, leaving us in the wasteland of human psyche and physics. Awesome album.
