(review) Mustasuo-Katharsis(Off Records Finland)

Mustasuo are hailing from Finland and this is their new record with Off Records Finland. The name of the band means black swamp, after a local city district of Oulu where the band comes from. They were formed in 2015. The music Mustasuo is harsh hardcore punk with a lot of d beat, old school Finnish hc punk influences and some black metal, popular blackened crust punk. There are 10 fast songs full of energy on this record sung in Finnish language. The vocals are screaming and remind me a lot of Croatian bands AK-47 and Ljubiša Samardžić, similar voice and screaming. The songs are raw, gritty, but with recognizable Finnish melancholy, spite and depression melody underneath it all. Also, some weird electronic voice parts in Kun illuusio sarkyy make the song fantastic and one of my album favorites besides Tuomitulle with doomy parts and Tuhoaja. Great album, great band.

Kurve, hardcore punk band from Zagreb, Croatia are no strangers to the pages of this zine. We reviewed their releases a while ago and now they treated us with new one.

This is actually new songs, by their standards the longest ever released lasting six minutes. In fact, this is a conceptual idea e.p. about being jobless, hopeless, trying to survive in bleak surroundings of grey everyday. The lyrics are again poetic and superb in Croatian language and work perfectly in unison with singer Vito˙s fantastic voice. These guys are perfect musicians and their song structures are really complex with many different parts sounding energetic and complex at the same time. In fact these guys are unique being art and hardcore punk at the same time, their shows are energy pure so check them out when this virus shit ends.

(review)No Sanctuary-Weird Slow Punk of Mystery and Imagination

No Sanctuary from Pamplona just released their new record. The thing about this band is they sound pretty original and different from other clicheed classical d-beat hardcore punk bands. No, they rather choose another way, mixing crust hardcore punk with darker elements of Celtic Frost, Black Sabbath, sludge and experiments of Amebix. This record contains 7 songs that are maybe a bit longer in duration but in no way boring. I love the dark atmosphere, slow rolling of drums in doom parts, the vocals ranging from shouting, chanting, almost gothic melodic singing, screaming and whispering. Also, I love when band uses samples in their music, No Sanctuary use samples very smart in their song structures thus making songs even richer with thick atmosphere. The lyrics are in English and in Spanish, from great ode to John Carpenter and VHS era(He Lives) to horror(Curse of the Werewolf) and for me the best song on this record, epic The Weaver in the Vault being Lovecraftian in atmosphere and lyrics. This is truely one of underground´s gems so go listen to this one.
