All Vukovar’s hooks are here. They still smoothly waltz out of time, out of genres. As usual, the music is filled to the limit with quotes, like Cortazar’s novels, making listening to an unforgettable experience of magical realism. So we weren’t too surprised to find a cover version of the Current 93 song (originally named Rome For Douglas P.) on the new album. Most likely this music is not for club dance floors and noisy stadiums (although it is quite suitable for slow drunk dancing in the rain). Vukovar’s songs are gentle and multi-layered and slowly unfold into beautiful whimsical flowers to a patient listener.
OTHER VOICES RECORDS, a label to match the group’s ambition, bring out this second CD in a planned series of releases in collaboration with world-renowned artist Andrzej Klimowski. ‘THE GREAT IMMUREMENT’ is out on the 25th May 2021.
Tir started its musical journey in Turkey, but now it resides in Australia. The music of Tir can be described as dungeon synth with dark ambient, dark/neofolk influences in the songwriting and song structures. This record offers 15 songs of epic soundscape. The atmosphere is majestic, epic, yet at the same time sometimes eerie. Dungeon synth is not the music for wide masses and for ordinary people, but all of the hearts that are really into it will find themselves more than satisfied with this album. My personal favorites on this one are Righteous Viraz with such epic almost fantasy melody and also The Dragon King Raised an Army having such vibe and atmosphere that you can almost touch it and feel it with your hands and it can enter all of your body through your eyes, ears and possess your mind and heart having that martial beat and making your skin crawl with goosebumps. But, you will have to find your own personal favorites if you love such music. Go ahead, have a listen, let yourselves go to other dimension with this one.
Urze De Lume just released their new, third album and I am really glad that I was able to listen to the album and reviewed it for this webzine.
Hailing from Portugal, Urze De Lume creates their music as a tribute to the past, days gone by and the cultural and musical tradition of Iberian peninsula. On this album, they created the second and final chapter in band´s ode to Autumn as a dark and rainy but also beautiful season when nature dies and the cycle of life starts once again. Although the song structures are mainly based on guitar work the band also heavily uses Iberian ethnic instruments such as bagpipes, war drums, horns and various ancient stringed instruments like for example rebec. The songs are mainly instrumental with vocals being scarce and mainly spoken or whispered and in my opinion not being really important to the music itself. Since the formation of the band in 2009. they became one of the best kept secrets of the Portuguese and European dark folk and the underground scene in general. Each of the 12 songs is the beautiful and darkened soundtrack to the walk in the woods and exploring and becoming one with nature in these times of fast living and living only to create money, spiritual pipe dreams and fast enjoyment. These guys prove with their music that there is the other side to the living. Each of the song titles is in the Portugese language so I can´t really understand the meaning of the song titles, but the music on this beautiful album speaks for itself!
