(record review)Circenses-“Tightrope Walk on the Ground”(Inverse Records)

Circenses from Finland started as one man band project by mastermind Severi Osala in 2016.  The band is hailing from Seinäjoki, Ostrobothnia. This is the album released on Inverse Records and I listened and reviewed it for this webzine.

The album contains 9 songs of melodic death metal combined with some prog elements. The whole thing sounds to me like more aggressive version of Edge of Sanity and I love this album because of that. I think that metal flows in people´s veins when they are born in Finland and this is no exception. I loved the melodies combined with blastbeats and keyboard background in “Lunacy” or tender and prog death metal parts in the title song. The vocals are harsh but understandable so this is one more plus for this album. As always, I am fascinated by the feeling of melancholy that Finnish bands create when doing their music and how their art sounds sad but also really majestic in my heart when I listen to it. This is great record, so go get it!

(news) UK death metallers Nihil Eyes to release “Black Path” via Ultraje on May 18th

UK death metallers Nihil Eyes have signed a deal with Portugal’s Ultraje to release their debut full-length “Black Path” for the first time on CD format on May 18th 2018.

“Black Path” offers a glimpse into the darkest aspects of the human psyche, exploring motivations for people’s darkest intentions. Topics include homicide, suicide, narcissism, mental instability and political corruption, all through different perspectives and approaches regarding composition and subject matter.

With the intention of making that kind of record that they would like to hear and play live, the British band Nihil Eyes offers eight tracks featuring a unique intensity in the contemporary European death metal scene, with excruciating riffs, guitar leads drawn from nowhere, horrifying voices and a musical aesthetic perception out of the ordinary. Heaviness, intensity, emotion and an honest representation of Nihil Eyes is what you can expect from this “Black Path”. Suitable for fans of Carcass and Bolt Thrower.

Pre-orders are now available at this location with free shipping worldwide: https://ultraje.bandcamp.com/album/black-path

(record review)Genus Ordinis Dei-“Great Olden Dynasty”(Eclipse Records Inc)

Genus Ordinis Dei come from Italy, the city of Crema. I must admit I have never heard of this band prior to this record, but I am really glad that I have heard them now, because this is excellent stuff.

They play some sort of modern melodic symphonic death metal with a touch of progressiveness in the song structures. If I must compare the music of this band to someone it would be like Edge of Sanity circa “Purgatory Afterglow” era met Ex Deo. I am talking symphonic parts with choruses, some nice keyboard haunting backgrounds evolving to main melody, catchy guitar hooks and memorable song melodies. Thats how I like my death metal to sound:epic, bombastic, grandiose and aggressive at the same time. Vocals are various and that makes them more enjoyable meaning there are growls, angry almost hardcore like shouting and melodic clean singing. Certainly one of the highlights of the album is for sure “Salem” with guest vocals provided by none other than Cristina Scabbia of Lacuna Coil but this is not the best song on the album, because they are all equally awesome.
