Miss Dreadful are horrorpunk/deathrock band from Ohio and I listened and reviewed their latest record for this zine.
To get one thing clear at the start of this review, this is not your basic in your face horrorpunk with lots of ooohs and Misfits/Danzig styled vocals. No. This duo consisting of Miss Dreadful and Johnathan Hatter plays a bit different music. Their music leans more on mystic, atmospheric, horror occult rock and deathrock with some punky elements thrown in here and there and horror lyrics about death, dark fantasies, madness and blood. The seducing siren melodic voice of Miss Dreadful is what takes this music and carries us as listeners to some other dark but nonetheless attractive dimensions. Like, when we are scared of something, but we just can˙t keep our eyes off of it. The music is slower to midtempo with interesting musical solutions in the song structures and nice melodic lines made as leading threads in the songs. For me, favorite songs on this record are Schizophrenic Psychopatic Love, In Her Grave and Taxidermy Boyfriend.
The Savage Seven are from Detroit and they recently released their new record and I listened and reviewed it for this zine.
I must admit that I have never heard of this guys prior to this record and I am glad that I discovered them now. This record contains 6 songs. The music of The Savage Seven can be described as a mixture of horrorpunk and 70-ies rock with garage punk thrown in the song structures making the material sound melodic, but gritty and dirty. The whole record sounds to me a bit like soundtrack from those Grindhouse movies and remind me of some bloody, gory, slasher like Rob Zombie´s flick 31 or similar. I liked oriental guitar in Roadside Burial and wild rock n roll energy in Mini Bus Meth Lab. This record is dark, but also has so much energy to fill in your bloodcraving black soul for a while leaving it wanting more. 7,5/10
Detoxi is an American band from Ventura, California and they play horrorpunk with darkened atmosphere and some gothpunk influences. I listened to their new record and reviewed it for this webzine.
I must admit I have never heard of these guys prior to this record, but I am glad that I have now. This record contains 5 songs and when you basically strip down the music what remains is pure blooded punkrock. The lyrics of the songs are darkened and you get a feeling of despair while reading and listening to the songs but this is not your basic horrorpunk with themes from the movies and novels and stories and legends. This is personal point of view and battling your own demons which I can feel in this music. This band probably maybe doesn´t feel like part of the horrorpunk scene but this record proves all the beauty and diversity of that beloved subgenre because horrorpunk community is still small and it´s good that it is small but tight and open to all of the influences, from industrial, doo wop to the classic Misfits-esque sound. If you like darkened punkrock then this record is just right for you.
