Back Garden Light were already featured on the pages of this zine, but this time, they released their new full length album. Hailing from Bordeaux and being formed in 2014 these guys manage to mix melodic punk, pop punk and metalcore in their music and they do it fantastic. This record contains 13 songs. What can we find here? Well, let us start with melodies. For all of us fans and us who love and grew up on melodic side of things, this one is a keeper. Epic melodies, both in guitar work and vocals which are harsh when needed and also emotional and melodic at the same time in song parts that make your skin crawl with goosebumps and make you wish for more. I am usually not an avid fan of metalcore, I am more on hardcore punk and skatepunk side of things, but this one is a keeper sounding energetic and modern at the same time, yet retaining that old school pop punk feeling. The lyrics are personal, but I can totally relate to them in many songs. My personal favorites are: The Right Side, On My Own and Live And Learn. Great record!
Proudhon are hailing from Besancon, France and this is their debut e.p. This one contains intro and ten songs of rusty death/grind as the band states in their bio. The production is rawer and dirty the way it should be with such music and crushing rolling death and grind obliterates everything in its path. The vocals are brutal and guttural but without that pig oinking effects that many bands in grindcore use now. Although the band carries the name of one of the greatest anarchists, they state that they do not necessary agree with all hjs ideas, they are rather celebrating the birth of anarchism in that part of France. My personal favorites on this record are: Die Rote Fahne, Have We Failed and 1936.
Back Garden Light are finally back under the light! Today marks the release of Such a Shame, the fourth single from the French band’s first album Back Garden Light out on February 26th. The infectious pop- punk song is the follow-up to Hitting the Road that came out early 2021 as well as two singles out since 2018 “Jumping Fences” and “The Right Side”. This is what the band has to say about the catchy new track: “We call it the hit among us because it’s probably the one with the most hit-like elements, and it’s been the subject of a music video with our usual Van Espen team. The song is in ternary which gives it an indecent groove for a pop punk song! The topic is quite classic, we call out TV fans or people easily influenced by the media. Special mention for the pre-break bell which was influenced by Futurama”
