(record review)RAUKOUS/TANZLER-“Split”(Nothing But A Nightmare)

I never heard for Raukous and Tanzler prior to listening to this release and I am thankful to Nothing But A Nightmare

This split release contains 12 songs, meaning six of both bands. Raukous is a hardcore punk band with horror lyrics and they are hailing from California. Musically, they remind me of American hardcore punk bands from the 1990s like Resist and such bands. Fast paced music, shouted lyrics and aggressive atmosphere make their side of the release very appealing to me. Of course, there are some Lovecraftian lyrics like “Pickmans Model” or “Thirteen Ghosts” that will make a horrorpunk in you jump and mosh around.

As for Tanzler side of the record, they play angry and very chaotic hardcore punk bordering with powerviolence in some songs. I can listen to such hardcore bands for a while but I am more fan of the melodic side of hardcore, so Tanzler was really not something that I would be listening to every day. Their lyrics as I understand are not horror themed, but doesnt matter. Nice release, go and support the bands and the awesome label.

(book review)ROGER MIRET with JOE WIEDERHORN-“My Riot:Agnostic Front, Grit, Guts&Glory”

I was at Punk Rock Holiday Festival this year in August when I found out that this book will be coming out soon and I immediately knew that I have to read it.

Roger-Miret-Book-Cover

Agnostic Front is a New York Hardcore band that influenced so many people in the scene and I still vividly remember that I saw their show twice in the last year and a half and they will always remain in memory being in top five shows that I saw. Roger Miret is the singer for Agnostic Front and hardcore legend and this book is his life story. The book is written with the help provided by Joe Wiederhorn and you can read it as one of the most intense thriller dramas that you ever read. You can almost imagine the movie made based on this book, but modern Holywood would only ruin it. The book gives us insight in Mirets early childhood and moving from Cuba to USA, living on the streets and in the squats of Lower East Side New York.

Of course, all of the Agnostic Front history is in this book, from the early United Blood days until nowadays and the book gives insight on many NYHC icons and the facts that I never knew before. Also, Miret gives us a picture of his personal life, relationships and his kids, the family that helped him make it through the darkest times in his life.

What really astonished me is the level of violence that was normal back in those days at the shows and in front of the clubs and I am really glad that I was not part of the scene engrossed in violence. After reading this book, I can say with certainty that Agnostic Front is one of the rare bands in the hardcore scene that really lived through what they sing in their lyrics.

This book is one of the best books I have read this year.

(record review)SPILL YOUR GUTS-“Hungry Crows”

Spill Your Guts is a band made of international crew, based in Shanghai, China. After releasing a couple of ep-s, this is their first full length studio album.

Spill Your Guts play pretty darkened hardcore punk with some black metal and rock n roll influences. The guys really know how to play, they recently returned from the extensive Russian tour. I would love to see them and hear them live one day. The album has 9 tracks and it is an energetic bomb so it will melt your face off and make your ears bleed with pleasure.

The lyrics are all in English language and I love how they are written, kinda deep but with a sharp edge. Thematically, they deal with some personal issues like being far from home, but also a lot of political stance, like fighting against prejudices in modern society, then again about friendship and how to keep it, and these guys have a really big heart and it is in a right place. This album proves that hardcore has no physical boundaries. The music is metal influenced and very dark, but also has some very fast blastbeats in song structures that kinda slow down in almost sludgy passages in some parts. Vocals are screamed and nicely done but there are also some clean melodic sung parts like in “Satan 3(some)”

This album is really good and if you love your hardcore punk with some dark stuff, get it and support these guys, I am sure that every support means a lot to them!
