(review) By A Storm – ‘Beware Of The Underdogs’ (Backbite Records)

German hardcore scene is alive and well, thriving with great bands and releases coming out every day. By A Storm were already featured with their single in this webzine, now is the time for their full length album to see the light of day. This one contains ten songs plus one re-recorded new version of previous song. By A Storm play old school hardcore which leans with both legs more into punk and street punk roots and some youth crew influenced hardcore, than in metalized modern hardcore which is popular nowadays. This is so evident in songs like ‘Modern Men’ or one of my favorites ‘We Carry On’. Vocals are screaming at the top of the lungs but somehow, sometimes evolving into great melodic parts where needed due to song writing. At times this band reminded me of Croatian hardcore legends Deafness By Noise. Between all hardcore harshness and speed, there are also street punk soulful melodic parts and sing along backing vocal parts just made to sing along. This record is a great piece of Euro core reminding me back in the days of all those bands on Lost&Found Records that I used to listen to when I was a hardcore kid growing up. Lyrically, By A Storm moves along typical hardcore themes, like dealing with life, friendships lost and gone, betrayal, hatred, loss and similar themes, the themes that drove me to hardcore many, many moons ago. Songs like ‘Too Late’, ‘Rebuild’ or the title song reminded me a lot why I love this music so much in the first place. This is one mean, lean fine old school hardcore record!

Low tuned darkened hardcore metal TOTAL RECALL announce new single ‘Memories are Gone’ Featuring Tim Rogler (Dagger Threat)!

Total Recall was formed in March 2019 in Milan,IT by experienced musicians with 20+ years of touring experience in the metal and hardcore scene. They decided to form this band to honor the memory of a lost friend.

The band released their first full length album ‘Always Together’ via the Australian 1054 Records in July 2021 and after a series of club shows and tour in Europe and UK they unleashed a brand new 7 songs EP to the masses on April 21st 2023 after signing a new deal with the German Label Empty Shells Records.

‘The Void’ was recorded and mixed by the producer Stefano ‘Orkid’ Santi (Cripple Bastards, Forgotten Tomb, Lvcifyer) and mastered by Scott Middleton (former Cancer Bats) and it is the most mature, controversial, dark and aggressive Total Recall release to date. It keeps the rough attitude of the previous album ‘Always Together’ but it will take you to a all different musical landscape enveloping you in a world of raw anxiety and self-conscious anger.

As for the Digital Release Total Recall will unleash 1 single every month on the main digital platforms starting from March 31st with ‘No Light’ (Feat. Diego DD Cavallotti from Lacuna Coil/Inverno) followed by the new single ‘Memories are Gone’ (Feat. Tim Rogler from Dagger Threat) which is available at the following location starting from May 26th.

This is what the band has to say about their new single ‘Memories are Gone’:

‘Memories are Gone it’s a very intimate song that we particularly care about. It reflects our musical evolution and beyond. The mix of styles that can be found in the song make it perhaps one of the most representative of our path. We are extremely happy to have had Tim guest on this song. Dagger Threat are a band that contaminates a lot and they are not afraid to do it, they have been doing it well and for years, writing solid songs and maintaining a precise identity. We recognize ourselves a lot in their approach even if our styles are different.’

(review) Deafness By Noise – Dial N for Noize (PDV Records)

Deafness By Noise are legends from our own Croatian underground scene. This band is hailing from Samobor area, and they just recently released their new full length album. I can say this is one of the top three hardcore albums in Croatian scene in last couple of years. I must also say that this album is full of surprises. Experience oozes from DBN because in long decades of their existence they played European stages with who is who of hardcore punk. The new record contains 13 songs. First thing that falls to ear is superb quality mixed by legendary Dane Tue Madsen and mastered by Paul Logus in New York. The music of DBN is not your fast hardcore punk like it was in the beginnings of this band, no they are mixture of hardcore punk roots, but rock n roll too, I daresay vocalist Krmpa and crew brought to the record amalgamation of their listening favorites, from hardcore, to punk rock and rock and roll. I must also say that singer Krmpa is like old wine, gets even better with years, his singing is melodic, yet hardcore shouting when needed but also fits perfectly to every second of this record. The record contains two surprising covers by Soft Boys and Tracy Chapman. My personal favorite vary from more hardcore oriented ‘Zero the Clock’, fine more melodic ‘Here We Go Again’ to the fantastic title song and ‘Overrun’ but all of the songs on this record are a lesson how hardcore rock n roll record should be done. DBN are pride of Croatian scene and I wish them many more years of bringing out great records!
