Time for a bit of horror punk rock to be featured on the pages of this zine. The Deathtones are coming from Pennsylvania and this is their full length album featuring 15 songs. As the band states on their Bandcamp page, these are all the best songs from their first year plus three new and exclusive songs. But, it doesn’t matter because to me, this full length is the first I heard of this band and I am loving it. This is not your Misfits or Blitzkid clone band, this is original horror/shock/punk rock delivered with conviction. I also love the use of samples in such bands and encourage them completely. This is metal influenced, as can be heard in the awesome title song, sounding a bit like Iron Maiden in the song structure but with superb double bass drum too. There are also gothic influences, at least in singing, as I heard it in ‘All Hallows Eve’. Lyrics deal with various horror and macabre themes, so the songs like ‘The Shape’ with great Halloween sample intro, or ‘Here With Me(A Chainsaw Love Story)’, maybe for all of you ‘Imposter At The Costume Party’ are about to win you over. This is one of the best horror punk releases I have listened in a long time. Maybe there are no sing along ooohs and aaahs but it is original, dark, gloomy and melodic. Love it!
thePicassos are back with another single, “Scarecrow’s Lament”, available now on all major streaming services, as well as download services including Bandcamp. Demonstrating thePicassos’ unique style of horror folk, this track features instruments including banjo and accordion to examine the emotional turmoil of a lonely scarecrow somberly witnessing the demise of its surroundings.
BZFOS are back! Shock Rock Rebels is the new, tenth album in the twenty blood soaked years these Vienna based fiends walk among us. This is the second album this band got away from their more psychobilly horror oriented history and evolved into melodic horror punk rock band, in fact doing what they want is what Dead Richy Gein and his gang do best. I can say this new collection of songs is somehow one level up continuation of their previous opus All These Fiendish Things. This new one contains melody, horror, sarcasm, black humor and gore, just like a good horror should do. I consider Richy one of the greatest horror movie fiend authorities in Europe and I love what he does and I can safely say this album and the previous one are the best this band has done yet. Although hits like Stop Writing Songs About Your Girlfriend, Damien, Belial, This Night On Halloween and other horror songs are my favorites, Off With Their Heads is absolute hit for me, being the fastest melodic anthem with slight political touch between the lines. There are rock songs, there are metal influences and hard rock, but common denominator behind it all is good old horror punk rock. Great album.
