(record review)SATORI JUNK-“The Golden Dwarf”(Endless Winter)

Satori Junk is the band hailing from Milan, Italy and this is their second full length album out on mighty Endless Winter Label. I listened to the record and reviewed it for this webzine.

The album contains intro plus six songs, one of them being The Doors cover of “Light my Fire”. The music Satori Junk are playing is some hybrid of doom metal with a lot of atmosphere and darkened, almost psychodelical passages with lyrics which draw inspiration from horror movies and literature combined with nightmares. Sound interesting? It bloody is. “All Gods Die” starts like a dreamy, atmospheric voyage, evolves into full blooded up tempo doom metal song only to die down in murky atmosphere again. “Cosmic Prison” starts almost as sludgy, rolling song being very tortured and very painful, like being trapped in the atmosphere of Lovecraftian cosmic horror. The electronic back sounds only add to the eerie feeling of this song. “Blood Red Shrine” is for me the best song on this record, having almost tribal, ritualistic primal vibe in its song structure. “Death Dog” is the longest song on this record and it reminds me a lot of old Hammer horror movies, I don´t know why, but it is a good thing. The title song is slow and dreamy, nightmarish doom horror anthem. I don´t like The Doors and their music but this cover of “Light my Fire” in doomy, sludgy version was just great. I am not a fan of music such as this, but this is a decent effort.

(horror movie)GET OUT(2017.)-good one but not quite horror

Chris Washington is a man that has everything he desired in his life. He has a beautiful girlfriend and he prepares to meet her family the Armitages for the first time. He is a bit scared what will their reaction be when they see that he is black, although his girlfriend assures him that they are not racist or have no prejudices.

When they arrive at her parents remote house, everything is nice and seems fun and smalltalk at first. During the dinner Chris realizes something is wrong talking with Allisons parents and her younger brother. Also, two coloured workers at the estate are acting strange. Suddenly, events unfold in fast and unexpected way.

Judging by all hype and media attention that rose around this movie I was determined to watch this one. Some of my friends have told me that its an excellent movie, so let us see how this one went for me.

This movie is placed nonchalantly and nominally under the banner of horror, but I will agree that the movie is more of a politically engaged thriller with racism still lingering in the world as a main theme. Daniel Kaluuya is brilliant as a main character Chris, but all of the cast is great mainly because of the great scenario.  Oh, that dream scare was a bit too much for me, but I love how the first fourty or so minutes of the movie go kinda slow, but then all hell breaks loose. The twist at the ending of the movie was great, but still calling this movie horror is a matter of discussion. This is a great movie, but maybe we should call it supernatural thriller instead.

(horror movie)THE BABADOOK-Psychological drama cleverly packed into horror

Hallucinating beautiful  piece of horror movie. Dreamy and melancholic. These are only couple of descriptions used to describe and experience watching Australian masterpiece.

Mom and son live together after the tragic accident in which father was killed. Mom fights insomnia, depression and nightmares at night and during daytime works in an nursery home and tries her best to cope with son Samuel and his behavioral problems. Loneliness prevails and sorrow is a constant until Samuel brings home the book for kids about the creature called Mr Babadook. Strange things begin to happen and the border between reality and madness becomes more and more blurred.

This move is a psychological drama cleverly packed into a horror movie. Story about single parent trying to keep your mind sane in the life struggle of the modern world which crumbles around you. The gradation of the scary and absolute lack of gore and death make this one a true gem. Why? Because not many modern horror nowadays base their fright on an atmosphere, instead they only use gore and special effects along with cheap tricks. Essie Davis is great in the role of dismayed mother Amelia and Noah Wiseman played little Samuel awesome. I am sure that we will hear more of the director Jennifer Kent as well in the years to come. Great movie!

Perfect song inspired with the movie by master Argyle Goolsby himself:
