(record review)DEAD NECK/ACTIONMEN-Defections(Mud Cake Records)

UK melodic hardcore punk heroes Dead Neck united with Italy´s Actionmen to create this split record called Defections which will be out in April via Mud Cake Records. I listened and reviewed it for our zine.

black and white

Both bands give 5 songs to their respective sides of this record. Actionmen side offers fast, melodic hardcore. The songs are okay, melodic, fast and energetic, but I didn´t really like the vocals. Somehow, the vocals are too low and too quiet for the music and in my opinion should be shouted or more energetic. Reminded me a bit of the more quiet version of Adam from the legendary Rome´s band This Side Up. Favorite Actionmen song: C´est Dada.

UK´s Dead Neck I have seen play live for the very first time last year at Punk Rock Holiday´s Beach Stage and they were great with their ultra fast melodic hardcore punk. Andy´s vocals on this record and the musicianship of the band as unit is tighter than ever. I love all five of the neckbreaking fast songs but my favorite is Seven Shades Of Shit. This is an awesome split record.

Italian melodic hardcore act Edward In Venice have announced the release of their new EP ‘Empathy’ via Lockjaw Records on 26 April 2019.

The announcement of their fourth record is accompanied by their latest video single ‘High Tide’, which features a cool 360-degree angled video of the band.

Edward in Venice believe that ‘High Tide’ is the perfect track to transition fans from their last EP ‘Howler’ (2015) to the new EP ‘Empathy’.

“We consider ‘High Tide’ to be one of the catchiest, and one of the slowest, Edward In Venice songs, so it’s going to have a new impact on the listeners,” says frontman Filo Greganti. “‘High Tide’ came together easily; we wrote it quickly and it just worked.”

Edward in Venice are from Pesaro, Italy. They’ve been playing explosive, shout-along hardcore since 2011; new EP ‘Empathy’ is their fourth release together. The band’s sound is quintessential screaming-fast melodic hardcore, with catchy melodies and a pinch of pop punk/emo thrown in.

“There was no deadline for ‘Empathy’,” explains singer, Filo Greganti. “There was no rush, which permitted us to perfect every single little thing in the music, artwork and videos, with the support of Lockjaw Records.”

Edward In Venicehave welcomed new guitarist Ivan Maioli to the band, who brought his own accent into the chaotic melodies that Edward In Venice is known for. This new addition and a relaxed and conscious approach to writing has enabled them to create a well-designed release.

Recording the EP was a collaborative affair, with the band working with to several producers to help record and engineer the album. The band recorded all the guitars themselves, while Riccardo Pasini from Studio73 in Ravenna, Italy, recorded the drums and Brendan Paolini recorded the vocals. Neil Kennedy from Ranch Studios was at the helm, producing, mixing and mastering the record.

They’ve completed several self-booked tours around mainland Europe, plus jaunts to the UK, Canada and Japan. They’ve supported incredible acts like Descendents, Flatliners, A Wilhelm Scream and Millencolin, as well as appearances at festivals like Groezrock, Punk Rock Holiday and Manchester Punk Festival.

The new EP, ‘Empathy’, is out on the 26thApril, 2019. Pre-orders with bundles are available now from the Lockjaw website: https://lockjawrecords.co.uk/edward-in-venice-empathy/
