(record review)NERDLINGER-“Happy Place”(Pee Records)

I mentioned several times how Australia has one of the best punkrock and hardcore scene out there and the bands and releases from there just keep proving it all the time. Nerdlinger are punkrock band from Sydney and this is their debut full length album out on Pee Records and I listened to it and reviewed it for this webzine.

PV020-1500

Since their beginning in 2012.these boys played over 350 shows and you can hear the tight musicianship in their songs. This album contains 14 excellent melodic punk hardcore songs. Nerdlinger plays melodic skatepunk hardcore in the vein of the 90-ies bands like Lagwagon, No Use For A Name and all the other Cali bands from that period that I love and listen to still today. The album varies from the faster ones like excellent “The Ballad of Rod Ligtning” or awesome “Sails” to more slower punkrock anthems like “Underrated” .The lyrics are personal and as I understood they have a great deal of humour and self irony, but the music kept it˙s dramatic melody like only melodic punk can have. I would really love to see and hear these guys play live because I have the feeling this sounds thunder like live. I can already hear the crowd sing along with the band on “Sunny Days”.

NERDLINGER-TOUR

The vocals are very important for me in such bands and Scotty and Timothy deliver a fine job with strong main vocal lines and nice done anthemic backing vocals that are also important for me because with the lousy main and backing vocals you could ruin the whole record in my opinion, no matter how great the melodies are written. There are couple of surprises on the album that make the album special like great guest vocals on “Sails”, some trumpets or similar instrument on “Fat Gav”. Nerdlinger will soon embark on their tour in support of the album launch through Australia and their first USA tour, so if you are from that area, be sure to check them out as a must hear!

(record review)Dead Girls Academy-“Alchemy”(Victory Records)

The story behind Dead Girls Academy is an exceptional one. It is a story about endurance, spite, learning to live again and to cope and it is very inspirational and makes you wanna get out in the morning and shout out to life, being alive and enjoying the music. I listened and reviewed this record for this webzine and it was very emotional for me. The record is out on Victory Records.

Michael Orlando lived in Los Angeles, had a band, toured and lived a rock ´n´roll lifestyle what many young people in his years only could desire. Then, a highway bus accident took his life. He died but lived. Brief death was an experience that marked him.

Three years of endurance, reconstructive surgery went by, with only one dream, to play again. Michael and his best friend Ronnie Radke (Falling In Reverse) formed new band, Dead Girls Academy and made an album. This is it. The album contains 11 songs of darkened melodic punkrock, vampiric punkrock if you want it that way. Growing up in Hollywood, Michael Orlando saw a lot of weird stuff, so there is no lack of inspiration lyricwise. Also, the album is in my opinion one great catharsis and showdown with his inner demons and all it took to endure what he endured. I enjoyed this album so much! From “I´ll find a way” to “I can´t feel a thing” this is so dark but uplifting. The mixture of melody, punkrock energy, gothic darkness and glammy sweat is what makes this album special. I always listen to the whole record when I do a review for this webzine and listening to this record was a unique experience and Michael´s work and this band and music is a continuing inspiration for me and this webzine.

(record review)STRUNG OUT-“Black Out The Sky e.p.”(Fat Wreck Chords)

California punk veterans Strung Out released their new e.p. on Fat Wreck Chords and it is a bit different than the material that we are used to listen by these legends. I listened and reviewed this one for my webzine.

index

The record contains eight songs, meaning six new songs and two, how should I put it remakes. Why is this record different than the previous releases by this legends? Because this record is a collection of acoustic songs. I don´t think that this is a bad thing, quite the contrary, with this release we are able to hear all the musician skills of Strung Out, the band who influenced so many with their unique blend of technical skatepunk and metal riffs. The songs on this record are in a darker mood, at least I felt like that when I listened. For me somehow the best songs on this record are “Town of Corazon” with a chorus that stayed in my head for days after listening and “Presidio”. I loved how Jason Cruz´s voice sounds better and better with the years. This is different but very fine record.
