(review) 86 It – ‘Everyday Is’

As I stated before, Canada has great punk rock scene and 86 It are from Ottawa and this is their EP, this one is out for couple of months now, but deserves attention and listening. This band provides 6 songs of fast hardcore punk/skate punk with melodic punk thrown in there for good measure. Male and female dual vocals interplay perfectly in songs like my favorite ‘It’s Gonna Blow’, added to fast drums and guitar that sounds like all those old school California hardcore bands, this one crosses between Circle Jerks and Black Flag mixed with melodic punk parts. Lyrics deal with every day life, hope, coping with troubles and emotions, so every one can relate to that. This is a short one indeed, but remains in memory with songs like ‘Long Gone’ and ‘Always Better’. I would love to hear full length some time in the future if possible, that would be great. This one is free at name your price, so if you go download it free at least drop a word or two to the band if you like it, I am sure they will appreciate it.

(review) Still No One – ‘This Is Fuel’

As I sad couple of times before, Italy has such great underground punk hardcore scene. Still No One are new to me, I never listened to them prior to this release. This band comes from Castelfranco Veneto, Italy and this album contains 12 songs. The name of the album is just that for me. Fuel for my old punk heart, melodic punk/skate punk anthems. Nothing complicated, nothing technical or prog, just old school melodic punk not dissimilar to No Use For A Name, of which they reminded me the most, but also all those early Epitaph/Fat Wreck releases from early nineties on which I grew up on. Music is mainly fast, energetic and melodic, vocals are beautiful, created backing vocals harmonies are superb and musicianship is tight, but it would have no means if the songs would suck, but here we talk about superb songwriting. Lyrics deal with personal themes, but also with situations we face in today’s worlds, thoughts about extinction, survival, hiding place where we can be ourselves, keeping the fight and flame burning among other themes. Although album as a whole is a hit for me, with so many great songs and fast melodies, my personal highlights and favorites would be ‘Welcome To Extinction’, ‘I Don’t Wanna Be A Punk’ and also ‘Until The Day’.

Have a listen if you love your punk rock done this way, you will not regret it.

(review) Boss’ Daughter – ‘Bouts With Bummers’ (SBÄM Records)

Boss’ Daughter from Nevada are one of the most hard working bands in the underground and this is their new album with SBÄM Records and it is a blast! This one contains 16 songs but don’t worry it is neither too long or boring. I am surprised how varied this album is. There are your classic fast skate melodic punk songs leaning in the nineties melodic punk like ‘Never Alone’ or ‘Photography’. But, there is almost ska punk rock vibe with ‘Extinction’ and ‘Singing About Drinking’ reminded me a lot of country songs in its skeleton, although it is a punk rock song. Vocals remind me at time of Fat Mike with color of voice and way of singing. Backing vocals and harmonies are just great and you caught yourself humming to the songs long after the album is finished playing. Brass and horns sections in some songs reminded me of Mad Caddies, but their fastest songs, like in one of my favorite on this record, ‘Religious Convenience’. Lyrics deal with personal themes, but cleverly written and somehow making me sad and nostalgic, but hey, maybe it is just me. Everything on this record suits me as a listener and fan of such punk rock just fine. Some of the songs I must also highlight on this record are ‘Four Seasons And A Movie’, ‘Away’ and ‘Imaginary Arguments’. Great one.
