I love horror culture and horror movies and one of my favourite actors and eternal inspiration is the late, great Vincent Price. I saw almost every movie he starred in and I am gladly returning to many of his works. This time I watched the classic sequel to Abominable Dr Phibes about mad and scarred doctor Anton Phibes(Vincent Price) who was left scarred monster after the horrrible accident in which his beloved wife Victoria perished. In the first movie, Phibes tried to exact revenge upon the ones whom he thought responsible for Victoria´s death. Assisted by his faithful aide Vulnavia, he managed to kill his opponents in many ingenious traps.

In this sequel, Phibes searches eternal life in Egiptian ancient pyramid and scripts to bring back Victoria to life. Police searches for him and he lays his traps again ready to fight until the bitter end.

This sequel is in many ways inferior in storyline to the first movie, but it is still a pleasure to see Vincent Price as Dr Phibes. In both movies Price doesn´t talk at all, he only acts with his face gestures and you can see all of his emotions, pain, anger, madness in his eyes and lips and gestures. His voice is only a recording. There are those creepy scenes again with Dr Phibes´s clockwork wizards, meaning his clockwork band. There are some illogical parts of the movie, the other actress starring as Vulnavia compared to the first movie and is Vulnavia also robot? Is she human at all? I think that Saw franchise, especially the first two movies found a lot inspiration in Dr Phibes movies, especially the first movie, considering death traps. In comparison to Saw movies, these two are almost child movies. One more thing that I must also mention is excellent and somewhat bizarre soundtrack in Dr Phibes movies and poetic and beautiful ending in both movies, telling us that love never dies and with strange aeons even death may die.

(horror movie)GET OUT(2017.)-good one but not quite horror

Chris Washington is a man that has everything he desired in his life. He has a beautiful girlfriend and he prepares to meet her family the Armitages for the first time. He is a bit scared what will their reaction be when they see that he is black, although his girlfriend assures him that they are not racist or have no prejudices.

When they arrive at her parents remote house, everything is nice and seems fun and smalltalk at first. During the dinner Chris realizes something is wrong talking with Allisons parents and her younger brother. Also, two coloured workers at the estate are acting strange. Suddenly, events unfold in fast and unexpected way.

Judging by all hype and media attention that rose around this movie I was determined to watch this one. Some of my friends have told me that its an excellent movie, so let us see how this one went for me.

This movie is placed nonchalantly and nominally under the banner of horror, but I will agree that the movie is more of a politically engaged thriller with racism still lingering in the world as a main theme. Daniel Kaluuya is brilliant as a main character Chris, but all of the cast is great mainly because of the great scenario.  Oh, that dream scare was a bit too much for me, but I love how the first fourty or so minutes of the movie go kinda slow, but then all hell breaks loose. The twist at the ending of the movie was great, but still calling this movie horror is a matter of discussion. This is a great movie, but maybe we should call it supernatural thriller instead.

(movie reviews)AFTER MIDNIGHT/COUNTESS DRACULA/IT

For us real horror fans, Halloween is every day, so I watch horror movies when I get the time. So, here are some of the movies I have seen lately.

First there is one horror anthology from the end of 80-ies, called AFTER MIDNIGHT.

I love to see a good horror anthology, made of many segments, like for example V/H/S or ABCs Of Death, although I prefer the older movies if possible coming from the golden age of horror, which was for me 1980-s. In such movies there is always a main line which connects all the other segments. This movie main story line consists of one psychotic college professor which calls a couple of students to his mansion to tell each other some scary stories. They tell the segments to each other and some stories are better, some are not so great, but in all, the movie was fun to see. Kinda average, nothing special, but fun.

Moving on to something completely different and better. Some of you who know me can tell that I am an avid fan of old Hammer Horror movies. This little gem connects history facts and gruesome horror story into one movie. Yes, you guessed it, this is COUNTESS DRACULA.

countess

This movie is based on life and crimes of Hungarian countess Elisabeth Bathory, the legend tells she and her men killed a lot of young girls so she could bath in their blood to rejuvenate herself. This movie has a tense story, great cast, including legendary Ingrid Pitt in the main role. You may remember her lending her voice to the excellent Cradle Of Filth album Cruelty and the Beast based on the same story. What I love about Hammer Horror movies is that they are not so gory, they dont have great special cgi effects but they have heart and soul and atmosphere and this still matters most to me in our beloved horror genre.

On Halloween I treated myself with cinema, and what better to watch then IT. It is an adaptation of Stephen King book which I read twice and I am a great fan of that book.

Many of us still remember the tv series from the 1990s based on the same novel and immortal Tim Curry as evil clown Pennywise who eats children in the town of Derry and a couple of kids who tried to fight the ancient evil. Well this immortal story lived to see its reboot/remake and I can tell you that the remake is excellent. First, I was sceptic since generally remakes ruin what was good in the original. I am happy I was wrong this time. The atmosphere of the movie is superb, soundtrack too, the actors are great and first Bill Skarsgard as Pennywise got on my nerves, but later on I love how he brought something psychotic, evil and new to the character. Two hours passed by me fast as hell and I cant wait for the sequel. The movie is divided into two chapters, one chapter showing main characters as kids, and chapter two happening when they are grown ups and It has returned to Derry.
