(review) CRO-MAGS -2020 (Mission Two Entertainment)

669289

Before this stupid year expires and goes into history, Harley Flanagan and Cro-Mags decided to treat us with another release, being 6 song e.p. with Mission Two Entertainment.

Prior to listening, I read different emotions expressed in comments, like this is no Cro-Mags anymore, that this sucks, that this one is shitty release. But you gotta form an opinion on your own. These songs are brutal hardcore punk done in Harley´s style and I like them a lot. You can´t live in Age of/Best Wishes times all the time. This is good musicianship, great and aggressive songs and Harley´s voice is soo brutal and soo perfect for this atmosphere created in the songs, perfectly depicting 2020 and all the shit, brutality and heartache it provided to us.

My highlights on this record are: 2020, Chaos in the streets, Violence and destruction.

(review) NO REDEEMING SOCIAL VALUE – WASTED FOR LIFE

cover-64

NYHC legends No Redeeming Social Value have a new record out. Formed in 1988. in Queens, they rock their vision of hardcore for more than three decades now. What I love about this band is that they play that old school hardcore we all know and love, leaning more on oi and street punk roots than this death metal crap they sell as hardcore nowadays. This record continues their more of a party hardcore mixed with serious lyrics about anxiety, friendship, scene and in all their humor and party lyrics you can find lots to identify yourself with if you listen and read between the lines. This album has many fan favorites just made for singing along at gigs, like Brew Crew, Wasted for Life, Punkrock Wedding Song, NYC NRSV, damn that is already almost half of the album which contains only ten songs. Dual vocals, anthemic song parts, make this record a new jewel in the hardcore crown. NRSV proudly carries on where Warzone stopped after the untimely death of Raybeez.

(review) Cro-Mags-In The Beginning

cover

The first real Cro-Mags new full length record is out and the wait is finally over! Harley Flanagan, one of the iconic men and legends of New York hardcore scene is back in big style with this one. I will not venture into talking about all the hardships Harley had to endure with band splitting up in two camps, all the problems and fuck ups he had in his life. I just listen and let the music speak for itself.

On this record we get 13 songs in the best NYHC way, metalic and nostalgic in a way, reminding me a lot of Best Wishes, my personally favorite Mags album, but also sounding fresh and ready for the 21st century and Harley´s angry deep voice spitting rage in the lyrics with song titles like One Bad Decision, Don´t Talk About It or PTSD. The album is very dark, fast and almost apocalyptic in its vibe, being great soundtrack to the anger, anguish and despair, but also hope, never giving up and fighting the world. The musicianship is fantastic, that can especially be heard in all the awesome guitar hooks and solos, also in the instrumental song called Between Wars. I knew by the e.p. that came out prior to this record, that we are in for a treat. But, this is great, energy filled street hardcore. Welcome back, Harley and the crew!
