(review) Memoriam – ‘Rise to Power’ (Reaper Entertainment)

Memoriam are from Birmingham, UK and its members have played or are playing in respectable number of bands such as Bolt Thrower, Benediction, English Dogs, Annihilator, Sacrilege to name just a few. According to former Bolt Thrower singer Karl Willetts who resumed vocal duties in this band, Memoriam was formed to tribute late Bolt Thrower drummer Martin Kearns and this is their fifth full length opus and a brand new one containing 8 songs. Memoriam plays old school UK death metal, not unlike Benediction and most certainly Bolt Thrower, with Memoriam also having mainly war and apocalyptic battle lyrics and song themes. This is the case with groove of ‘Never Forget, Never Again(6 Million Dead)’, but also there are faster, almost d-beat songs like excellent ‘Total War’. Karl Willets sings and growls better than many of his younger counterparts and guy’s work ethics are inspiring, but the songwriting is what makes this album superb. Songs like ‘I Am The Enemy’, ‘All Is Lost’ or the title song ‘Rise To Power’ are a lesson in old school British death metal like it was played in glory days and shows that this scene is alive, well and ready for war!

(review) DENOMINATION – THEY BURN AS ONE

Denomination are from Germany and after one e.p., this is their first full length opus. This one contains 13 songs, two of them being intro and outro. After an ominous war fueled intro, the carnage starts. Denomination play old school death metal, leaning heavily on European school, mainly nineties old school Swedish death metal, not sounding like a clone, but bringing the style to new millennia. There are also blast beats, but I love how some songs also have that unmistakable d beat insignia and great strong growling vocals, coupled with razor sharp guitar riffs, but hiding behind all the brutality, there lays a melody, and that melody brings a melancholy to chaos, a pain to war if you want to put it that way. Songs like Bugs, Left hand of god, Cleansing flames are sure to win you over if you are a fan of such kind of death metal. This is a very strong debut album and a lesson in Euro death metal, how it should be done.

Old school death metallers OVERTOUN sign with Wormholedeath!

Santiago-Boston Old School Death Metallers OVERTOUN have signed with Wormholedeath a deal for the reissue of their album “This Darkness Feels Alive”, which is due for re-release on May 27th, 2022.

Overtoun signing statement: “We are truly honored and happy to sign this distribution deal with Wormholedeath. ‘This Darkness Feels Alive’ is an honest album that navigates through complex concepts of mental health, isolation, depression, etc; that came from the deepest part of ourselves. We invite everyone to listen to the record from start to finish, so hopefully you can connect with the sensations we had while writing it. All the work we did on the album was trying to achieve the best quality we could provide, thanks to the guidance of Pancho Arenas who produced and mixed it, the knowledge of Flemming Rasmussen who mastered the songs, and the incredible artwork of Paolo Girardi. The result we had as a team made us really proud, and we are excited to share this music to even more people. This partnership with Wormholedeath will help us elevate our career without a doubt. Everything we’ve done in music has been by our own and independently, so having the support of the label is important to us. We will do our best to keep spreading Latin American Metal to the rest of the world.”

Bringing back the brutal force and sounds of Old School Death Metal mixed with Latin American music, the revolutionary young band from Santiago/Boston has been spreading their talent, passion and energy all over the world, characterized with their outstanding musical quality and powerful social commentaries.
The group was born in the hands of Agustin Lobo (drums) and Matias Bahamondes (guitars) in early 2014, but they were not complete until the addition of Mexican vocalist Yoav Ruiz-Feingold, who joined in late 2017. They’ve not stopped working since the release of their debut album Centuries of Lies (2018), which originated from a demo tape called Eyes Wide Open (2016), that establishes a strong social commentary blended by the rage of Progressive Thrash. Going through various lineup changes, their toured their home country twice, getting a lot of recognition in national and international media.
Just in the past year, the renowned bassist Felipe Leyton joined them, finishing their search for an established lineup. Their hard-working attitude led them to write and record their sophomore album in a matter of months since the release of their first LP. They took their perfectionism to another level, searching for the best production quality in every aspect. Their second album ‘This Darkness Feels Alive’ is a record that goes inside the hell of the human mind, alongside a crushing attack of pure and organic Death Metal and It will be reissued via Wormholedeath worldwide.
