(gig report)IGNITE back in Zagreb in Vintage Industrial Bar+SHIN(Zg)-31.01.2019.

Winter is somehow going to slow but certain end and all that sweet Spring and Summer season gigs and festivals are coming back. For start of that season, the good people at Vintage Industrial Bar Zagreb brought melodic hardcore heroes IGNITE from Orange County, California, back to our shores.

Our little international Croat-Slovenian crew started our trip around 6.30 pm, and with a lot of laughs and great company with some stops for pissing we were in Zagreb around 8 pm. We had some time to kill before the gig, so we went to grab some beers and energy drinks in front of the nearby drugstore that is open 0-24 hahah. There we hung around and then all of our friends we haven˙t seen for some time now slowly gathered and it was gig time.

Vintage is for me the most beautiful and one of the best clubs I have ever been to in my life. We said hello to some friends there and talked a bit and then SHIN started to play. I saw those guys play live only once in Prostor in our hometown and liked their set there. When it was announced that they will support Ignite, I looked forward to their show. I was not wrong.

Their bass player was sitting down, I guess the guy has a broken leg or something, but it doesn˙t matter. Shin play melodic modern version of hardcore with some old school elements and they played in many other bands prior to this one, so they really know their hardcore. They played setlist from both of their releases, album and e.p. and the people in front of the stage really appreaciated their set including me. They played half and hour or so. It was only too bad that the crowd was really static, but that˙s how it goes sometimes, but the show was great nonetheless.

After a quick stage makeover it was time for IGNITE to start their show. This was the third Ignite show in three and a half years, and I am going to see them once again this Summer at Punk Rock Holiday, so I had no special expectations, but Ignite is Ignite and led by the special voiced singer Zoli Teglas, they opened with Poverty For All and all of the club just exploded with energy.

I was amazed, like everyone in the club was singing and the smiles were upon people˙s faces and that is whats important, positive mental attitude. Who Sold Out Now and Veteran brought people on their toes. It was very hot suddenly despite the winter outside.

The kids were crowdsurfing and stagediving a bit, but we all took care of one another and fun was all around. The set was filled with great songs like My Judgement Day which Zoli dedicated to Donald Trump, the title song of the current new album, Know Your History, Fill in the blanks, Run, but the special vibe was the acoustic version of Slowdown which we sang so hard that even Zoli was amazed and then A Place Called Home, traditionally sung half in Hungarian, half in English.

The setlist has some changes from the last time I watched them, so they played cover by Bad Religion, the song We´re only gonna die which surprised me and I was curious whether they will play some really old songs. Fortunately, they did, they played legendary Call on my brothers and In my time after congratulating Filip from Zagreb, their stage manager on becoming father. Sunday bloody Sunday marked somehow the end of the regular set, but they said that it was stupid to get off the stage and then we shout for more, then they come back etc etc, so they played more immediately.

It was the first time I saw Ignite play with two guitars, it sounded really awesome and mighty. For the end they left three songs, but first Zoli told us the story of I think Dutch fan who is sick from cancer, the doctors told her she had a month to live, but she is still alive now and fighting five years later. They dedicated Nothing can stop me to all the people who are fighting cancer and similar wicked diseases. Then it was time for the song which always brings goosebumps to my skin. Live for better days,  which every one of us sang, hugged our friends and just always I get goosebumps and tears of joy in my eyes while singing to this song. Then, Zoli thanked everyone who came out and made full house Vintage on a winter Thursday night and Ignite finished their set triumphantly with Bleeding.

We were tired but happy to witness another gig that filled our batteries and made us stronger, more inspired to fight on and more than ever resolved to build this scene and support one another. This is the magic of Ignite and their music. We hung around for a while, said our goodbyes to the people we love and went to the car to get home to our north, tomorrow is a work day, but it is Friday, and we have great memories of a triumphant evening, so it is easy to survive work day on our shitty jobs.

(record review)WANK-White Knuckle Ride

Orange County veterans WANK are back in action. After an e.p. in 2016., they released their new full length record and I listened to the music and reviewed the record for our zine.

WANK_Cover_Art

Formed in 1995.at the height of mid nineties melodic punk frenzy, Wank released the debut record and played many shows with almost all the big bands of that time but in 2000.bassist/vocalist Bobby Amodeo fought the disease and the members played in other bands. Now, reunited and stronger than ever, they are back with the new record.

The record contains 11 songs of melodic punkrock and when I say punkrock I mean just that, lovely punkrock, maybe not fast as I love, but indeed with awesome song structures, beautiful choruses and tunes that make you hum them long after you finish listening to the record. There is a reggae influenced punk in We Wanna Rock, heartwarming lyrics in all songs, especially in my favorite It Was You. All the lyrics are personal but I can relate in all the songs with themes like not giving up, love, heartbreak, coping in this world, hope, in fact, these guys remind me a lot of Descendents but maybe less frantic than Milo and crew and more ska in song structures. Won`t Let Go is also one of my personal favorites on this record, besides Salvation, the song guys chose for the single. I love this record. If you are a fan of great, heartfelt punkrock, this one is just the one for you.

(news)Chris Shiflett of Foo Fighters Produces Orange County Punks, WANK; Check Out The In-Studio Video

Orange County pop punk vets WANK were recently in the studio, recording a new song (“Salvation”) with longtime friend, Chris Shiflett of Foo Fighters.

Check out a video of the session here: https://youtu.be/dmS1RVMjAE4.

Shiflett says, “I had a blast working with my old buddy Danny and his band mates in Wank on “Salvation.” There’s nothing better than tweaking good songs under the microscope in the studio with a good band and leaving in a different place than you started in.”

Guitarist Danny Walker says, ” I’ve always been impressed with Chris Shiflett, the guitarist, even back when we met in 1994, but he’s got great producer chops, too. When I asked him to produce WANK, he picked the song “Salvation,” and he had a vision for it. He wanted it “live” and brought riff and arrangement ideas that all worked to make the track rock harder. Chris was awesome to work with!”

Guitarist Higgins X-13 says, “I feel honored that he was willing to make the time to work on this song with us. Working with Chris Shiflett on “Salvation” worked out super well. Not only was it fun to just hang out with him and reminisce a little bit about touring together during my time with the Offspring (and hanging out at various show once he joined the Foo Fighters) but he did a really great job on this song. We did a bunch of work before meeting up with Chris – trying a key change, different bridges, all sorts of variations. Chris came in and really got us focused and helped us realize which were the strong parts of the song. By encouraging us to extract the best parts of the arrangement he helped us to get excited about this song again and coaxed a really dynamic performance out of all of us for the basic tracks. He encouraged Danny to write a little riff that plays at the intro, outro and middle 8. I really love what the riff added to this tune! I figured that Chris would definitely be a good fit, but I guess I would just say “Better Than Expected”, about the result. It’s just more fun to play this song now. I’m really happy with it.

Featuring founding members Bobby Amodeo, Spider, Danny Walker, and the new addition of Higgins X-13 (formerly of The Offspring). WANK plans to release their new album ‘White Knuckle Ride’ later this year.

“Salvation” will appear on the upcoming album. A video for the first single “Shut You Down,” is streaming here:

WANK will play two shows at their old stomping grounds, the World Famous Doll Hut in Anaheim, CA on Nov. 16 and 17. Dubbed ‘Wank Weekend,’ the gigs will feature a different supporting lineup each night. Facebook Event: https://www.facebook.com/events/292439218154056/.

WANK formed in 1995 in Huntington Beach, CA. Mixing pop sensibility, rock chops, and punk energy, WANK (influenced by the Beatles and the Clash, among others) quickly gained momentum and garnered a reputation for themselves with melodic songs and highly entertaining live shows. In 1996, WANK self-released their debut, Get a Grip on Yourself. Their continuing success as a live act brought them to the attention of producer Mike Ness of Social Distortion, who oversaw the recording of “Larry Brown” for a split 7″ on Time Bomb Records (1997.) Ness also produced WANK on their version of “Auld Lang Syne,” their contribution to the comp, Christmas Gone Wrong (1997.)

In late 1997, “Forgiven” was added to rotation at the World Famous KROQ 106.7 in Los Angeles, and WANK was still unsigned. An industry bidding war ensued, and WANK signed an historic record deal with Maverick Records. In 1998, following an expedited major label re-release of Get a Grip on Yourself, WANK took their show on the road, touring with The Specials, Goldfinger, Social Distortion, and Warped Tour ’98. The band parted ways with Maverick Records in 1999 and focused on other projects.

In 2000, Amodeo was diagnosed with cancer, and after years of treatment, he’s back and rock ready. Walker formed and fronted Handsome Devil and was signed to RCA in 2001. Handsome Devil released three albums – Love and Kisses (2001), Knock Yourself Out (2004), and Fully Automatic (2007), and toured with The Used, Lit, Zebrahead, and Warped. In 2007, Walker and friends (from Lit, Adolescents, and Cadillac Tramps) formed Rockers in the Round – an acoustic showcase series. Walker released two singer-songwriter albums – Mumble & Strum (2011) and Salvation (2012). Spider focused on session work and artist management, and he’s still the hardest hitting drummer around.

WANK reunited in 2016, self-releasing their 5 song EP – On with the Show and, in 2017, added guitarist Higgins X-13, formerly of the Offspring. In 2018, WANK is in the studio finishing a new full length album for release. Enjoy – WANK is back.
