Best known for his bands Craig’s Brother, This Legend and Brookhurst, Californian singer & songwriter Steven Neufeld is thrilled to announce the release of his new solo album, Craig’s OTHER Brother. Out today via all major platforms, the album is also getting the vinyl treatment courtesy of Thousand Islands Records (North America) and White Russian Records (Europe). Craig’s OTHER Brother is a self-made album.. born out of an era where it felt appropriate to ditch the bandmates/baggage and to record all the instruments myself, much like I used to back in the late 90’s in a crude bedroom studio setup. Thanks to some better gear at hand at age 37 than I had access to as a teenager (nicer instruments, pro mics, and caring about room quality/levels), I was able to have some peace of mind while diving ambitiously into a batch of my song ideas, which were plucked at random from the oceans of ideas available to me.. saved up from years of sitting down and singing/writing with my acoustic guitar, whenever I felt particularly inspired. Additionally, I must add that the creation of this material was certainly energized by anxiety and isolation during the global pandemic.

Staying true to a self-taught recording method I adopted in the 90’s, I started by sitting down at my drums without a click/scratch track, only the prospective song freshly in my head, and kept tracking until I got a full take without any glaring mistakes. Next, I miked my guitar amp, and just went forward into the process as organically as possible, obsessing over being quick about it while not ignoring the details. Then onto bass, followed by vocals. It was mostly a blur, to be honest, as the outpouring of emotions involved in the making of this solo album was clearly long overdue for me as a musician. A lot of spontaneous choices were made.. laying down whatever felt right in the moment. A lot of the lyrics on these songs are somewhat of an obscure poetry-flow from my subconscious mind.. an angle I like to write from sometimes, allowing the listener to make their own meanings to the phrases as they see fit.

I must say, it was a new and pleasant experience to have had 100% creative control of every single second of all 10 of these songs, production-wise. And diving into mixing my own music was a fun task, as well.

Craig’s OTHER Brother represents an exciting new era.. one in which I will be focusing on hatching out more melodic punk records under my own artist name.. and COB is just the tip of the iceberg. Please enjoy this musical snapshot in time. – Steven Neufeld

About The Fly Downs

Ottawa’s own Alternative-rock-infused Pop Punk band, The Fly Downs, have been making waves since October of 2016. A little over a year later they would release their well-received first EP, “Pockets Out”. After a release party and a couple more shows, Alex would join in January of 2018, joining forces with Jesse and Shane to bring a new dynamic to the rhythm section, helping set the stones for the future path of the band.

The Fly Downs have not really been compared to other bands, since their style is something of their own. Inspirations from all 3 bandmates mesh into one solid state and contribute to the overall sound and style. Inspirations include many of the bands they have shared the stage with: This Is A Standoff, Ten Foot Pole, The Human Project, The Mahones, W!nslow, and Down By Law to name a few.

The Fly Downs strive to entertain audiences and fans with a high energy and inclusive performance, often igniting group chants and sing-alongs with the audience. Never compromising catchiness for complexity, their songs are composed with a healthy blend of both. The lyrics often have outward-looking subject matter that many can hopefully find themselves in.

With the recent teaming up with Thousand Island Records and subsequent release of their debut full-length album, “At This Point In Time”, The Fly Downs are eager to hit the road again to share their music and make many more friends along the way.

(review) The Speakeasy-Tales From The Moonshiner Part Two:Requiem(Thousand Islands Records)

a2509271551_10

The Speakeasy are from Montreal, Canada and this is their brand new e.p. out with Thousand Islands Records.

These five songs are in fact a sequel, follow up to the part 1 that was self released in 2018. The music of The Speakeasy is something to be reckoned with. I love the no bullshit, no holds barred old school mixture of nineties melodic hardcore punk/skatepunk with some pop punk influences thrown in the song structures. From the two fast more straightforward skatepunk songs Whisky Tigers and Sunday Blues with nice catchy hooks, melodic verses and harmonies on choruses just made to sing along with, to my favorite song on the record being Down In History, with such beautiful lyrics about loss and coping with it and carrying on when you can´t no more, topped with drama and melody, this song was on repeat for like ten times. Lord Knows is a bit different song from other material, being more rock song with metal influenced guitar riffs reminding me of Volbeat in a weird way. Requiem is another personal favorite of mine, I know, I know, I am depressed sad little fucker, but I love rough yet melodic vocals this band has, speed, melody and such fantastic lyrics this song has. This is an awesome record, I can´t wait for the full length and to see these guys once live playing on stage once this covid shit ends.
