(review) Blind Guardian – The God Machine (Nuclear Blast)

I loved Blind Guardian and their old school legendary back catalogue, until Nightfall…album, later on they became too prog with too riff soup songs that were too long and lost their anthemic value to epic prog metal and I found most of their newer albums pretty boring. But, lo and behold the new one is upon us and it is a step back to that old school glory days, meaning more aggressive sound, faster songs and their trademark power/true metal which made them so beloved in the first place. Hansi Kursch sings like he is back in Imaginations…era and most of all, here is quality songwriting at play. Opener Deliver Us From Evil is a straightforward warrior song with all BG qualities, fast riffs, superb melody and sing along anthem. Damnation is a dramatic song with choir refrain, wicked guitar solo and tempo shifts but not pretentious, rather practical. Secrets Of The American Gods is a song that I heard prior to album and it promised to be, despite its length, a nice addition to the band´s setlist for tours. A bit more slower, but hits you right in the eye with Neil Gaiman inspired atmosphere coupled with fantastic guitar work of Olbrich/Siepen. Violent Shadows is by far the hardest song, total thrash speed metal attack with double bass drumming and blistering speed. Life Beyond The Spheres is the song I personally don´t like, it is boring and too long and belongs to that part of Blind Guardian I am not too fond of, but luckily, album goes on. Architects Of Doom is for me another highlight on this album, again treading into thrash speed metal waters but retaining enough BG melody in chorus to counter all harshness. Blind Guardian gave us some of the greatest ballads, so this album also has one, called Let It Be No More. In my opinion, this one is not the same level as those ballads that went to become legendary, this one is average metal ballad, not memorable. Blood Of The Elves is another banger of a song, melting your face with sharp riffs and great chorus. Destiny closes the album in grandiose and bombastic style. Although there are couple of weaker songs, this is a strong album by German legends.

(review) Manowar – Highlights From The Revenge Of Odysseus

Kings of metal are back with their new opus and it is an e.p. with three songs plus two spoken words. You guessed it from the title, this time our warriors deal with Homer´s timeless epic work, Odysseus and his adventures being the centrepoint of this heavy metal epic opus. Athena´s Theme is an instrumental atmospheric synth intro for Telemachus-Part I, being spoken word in Greek, for which recording Manowar traveled all the way to Greece and they brought help of, among others, none other than Sakis Tolis, mastermind of Greek legends Rotting Christ. Where Eagles Fly is a power true metal ballad with dual vocals of Eric Adams and guest Chiara Tricarico interplay making goosebumps on my skin and my old warrior heart weeping with joy. Odysseus And Calypso is another spoken word by Kostas Kazatos reminding a lot of Orson Welles back in the day. Immortal closes this e.p. and it is an epic anthem in Manowar style just made for enjoying live. I am happy for this e.p. but it is rather a teaser than trailer, with very little music and too much spoken word.

(review) WarWolf-Necropolis

WarWolf are hailing from Cologne, Germany and this is their debut full length opus. The band was formerly known as Wolfen from 1994 to 2021. This one contains ten songs. The music of WarWolf can be described as old school Teutonic heavy metal with a steely breath of power metal thrown in the song structures for good measure. If I must describe it and compare it to some band it would be a mixture of Grave Digger and Wizard. The first comparison is in order, because the album is produced by none other than Chris Bolthendal, Grave Digger singer. The music is up tempo, warrior stomping metal, with great melodies and vocals that are not so high and screaming but singing, tough yet melodic. Lyrics deal with vampires and werewolves, kind of Underworld movie thematics with songs like Daywalker, Nosferatu, Clan Of The Undead being highlights of this album for me. The title song, besides being the longest song on this opus is also a bit similar in parts to Sign Of The Cross by Iron Maiden. Maybe it is just me, but I can hear similarities in some parts. In all, this is a decent metal album. Nothing special, but decent.
