(record review)AVAS-“Avas”

UK hardcore punk scene was always awesome, filled with excellent bands and Manchester´s AVAS are one of them. This is their new e.p. and I listened to the record and reviewed it for this webzine.

Formed in 2010., Avas released two albums and two ep-s, played live a lot of times and shared stages with H2O, SNFU, Death Before Dishonor and many more. This record contains four songs of high explosive energetic hardcore. “Think” is a pure hardcore song with gang backing vocals, positive attitude and more similar in my opinion to NYHC school than to European hardcore school. “Friendzone” is punkrock song with shouting back vocals just made for jumping and shouting at the gig and it reminded me a lot of Sick Of It All punkier anthems. “You and I” is another hardcore fast bomb in the old school youth crew way, an ode to friendship, scene and hardcore which reminded me when I was a kid like 20 or 25 years ago, when I went out with my hardcore crew and we felt invincible band of brothers. The best song on this record for me is ” Open Heart” which is the most melodic song on the record with beautiful sung vocals, great anthem and the whole song somehow reminded me of Endpoint. You might notice that I compare the bands a lot, but this in no way means that Avas are clones of those bands or stuff like that. Quite the contrary, this is an awesome hardcore e.p. which made my day and filled me with pure hardcore energy!

(record review)HUMMER-“Budweiser and Butter”(Horn and Hoof Records)

Hummer is a punkrock trio from UK, this is their second e.p. that came out on mighty Horn and Hoof Records, so I listened to the record and reviewed it for this webzine. I love discovering new bands that I hadn´t heard before!

Budweiser-and-Butter.jpg

“Budweiser and Butter” is the second e.p. from Hummer, following up on 2016’s “Work.Home.Bed”. This record contains 8 songs of excellent melodic punkrock played with heart and soul. If I must compare this band to someone I could draw some The Menzingers and The Lawrence Arms paralels. Bassist Will Atkinson and guitarist Joe Watson interplay on dual vocals just great, one delivering a bit harsher voice and the other one being a bit more melodic, not to mention excellent backing vocals meaning heavenly harmonies on anthemic choruses made for humming the whole day long. The lyrics are personal and with a lot of emotions lying behind the meanings of the songs, I love punkrock with emotions in the songs, so you can just feel the warmth, sadness, happiness and find yourself in the beautiful songs. Until recently, I only liked the faster more straightforward stuff, but in the last couple of years I started to love and found myself in emotional punkrock melodies. I love this record! Show some love and drop some lines to the band I just know it would mean a lot to them! Listen their music and hear the melodies and hear the emotions! Top songs: “Turpentine”, “Stone Cold Wasted”.

(record review)NIHIL EYES-“Black Path”(Ultraje)

UK´s death metallers Nihil Eyes released their debut full length via Portuguese Ultraje and I listened to the record and reviewed it for this webzine.

The record contains 8 songs of death metal done in UK style meaning there are blast beats but proving that the speed is not the only given quality factor in death metal. Most of the songs are mid tempo, not Obituary tortoise style mid tempo, but a bit more aggressive and faster but remaining powerful like blows pounding to your face. Out of nowhere suddenly a melodic guitar solo arrives and spices up the song structure. If I must compare the music of Nihil Eyes with someone, it would be a mixture of Bolt Thrower and Carcass circa “Heartwork” era because of anthemic melodies. This record sounds cold and at the same time emotional and that is the thing that makes this record great. Check it out and send some good feedback to the guys, I know it would mean a lot to them!
