“I like go-go music and soul and anything that really moves. I first heard Amerie’s “1 Thing” in 2005, when it was released. Fucking infectious man, the way that groove keeps rolling, and she’s such a great vocalist. The lyrics were your basic relationship trip but then it hit me, this isn’t just a song about some dude, these lyrics read like a song to a system or a government that’d been up to no good. When she sang, “memories keep ringing bells” I was thinking of the state of our union today, the turmoil in our society, and where we’d been before—I was musing on our involvement in the Middle East, Latin America, Vietnam. I was thinking about the dirty deeds that this nation had been up to and then she sang, “why don’t you just admit it” and I realized that no one in power, not in this country, was ever gonna admit that we were wrong.”

(news)Horror Section Releasing Self-Titled Debut LP on Vinyl/CD December 7th (Grindhouse Cinema-Inspired Punk Rock)

EP46_Cover_Art

After years of sold-out 7” EPs, singles and comp appearances, St. Louis’ Horror Section finally delivers their highly anticipated self-titled debut full-length on December 7 via Eccentric Pop Records.

These guys have spent years perfecting their grindhouse cinema-inspired punk rock, sharing the stage with contemporary icons like Teenage Bottlerocket and the Lillingtons, and sharing split records with the legendary Dan Vapid and the Cheats (Screeching Weasel / Riverdales).

A teaser single released ahead of the LP (”They’re Inside”, A-side) quickly earned over 20,000 plays on Spotify and sold out on vinyl within a few short weeks.

Horror Section’s LP plays like the punk rock soundtrack to a drive-in slasher flick- a toxic sonic sludge that is equal parts Ramones and Freddie Krueger.

(record review)Miss Dreadful-Evil Hides

Miss Dreadful are horrorpunk/deathrock band from Ohio and I listened and reviewed their latest record for this zine.

a2022304459_10

To get one thing clear at the start of this review, this is not your basic in your face horrorpunk with lots of ooohs and Misfits/Danzig styled vocals. No. This duo consisting of Miss Dreadful and Johnathan Hatter plays a bit different music.  Their music leans more on mystic, atmospheric, horror occult rock and deathrock with some punky elements thrown in here and there and horror  lyrics about death, dark fantasies, madness and blood. The seducing siren melodic voice of Miss Dreadful is what takes this music and carries us as listeners to some other dark but nonetheless attractive dimensions. Like, when we are scared of something, but we just can˙t keep our eyes off of it. The music is slower to midtempo with interesting musical solutions in the song structures and nice melodic lines made as leading threads in the songs. For me, favorite songs on this record are Schizophrenic Psychopatic Love, In Her Grave and Taxidermy Boyfriend.
