(review) Agathodaimon – The Seven (Napalm Records)

I remember Agathodaimon well from second half of the nineties when they released their great albums Blacken The Angel and Higher Art Of Rebellion, both being a masterpiece of gothic influenced vampiric black metal with long songs, perfect mixture of black screaming and clean vocals and great melodies bringing something progressive and fresh into the scene. They released six albums and disappeared and now they are back with new opus and new line-up, but the constant backbone is guitarist/vocalist Sathonys. New opus contains 10 songs of beautiful melodic atmospheric black metal with great songwriting, fantastic melodies but the one thing that really stands out for me is interplay between Ashtrael´s shrieking voice and Sathonys´ clean and gothic voice thus delivering the skinprickling atmosphere of almost touchable darkness. The songs are not so long as in the first albums, but they tell the story of persistence, emotions, darkness, a bit romantic gothic vampirism and longing, eros and thanatos. My personal favorites are Mother Of All Gods which features ex member Vlad Dracul, also Ain´t Death Grand and both In My Dreams conceptual songs. Welcome back Agathodaimon, with a strong return album.

INSAMMER one of Sweden’s most promising metal bands releases new album ‘Black Art’!

Swedish rockers INSAMMER has released a new album called ‘Black Art’. A masterpiece of 11 tracks of total guitar and drums madness, filled with moments of relentless energy throwing back to their punk and rock roots to visionary moments of modern alternative.

INSAMMER vocalist Vika says: “Our third album ‘Black Art’ is a powerful and strong statement of the modern world. We spent almost a year in the studio during pandemic period, we wrote over 40 songs and had to choose from them. We took 11 tracks of pure rock vibrations with excellent lyrics to rock the house. For the first time in our career, we truly put it all out there. The album’s lead single, “Black Art”, is about dark times on the internet and hard situations on the political stage. We are all in the process of transformation”.

‘Black Art’ track listing:

1 Prophecy

2 Fly Away

3 Black Art

4 World Wide Web

5 No One Is Saving You

6 Endless Sky

7 Vampires

8 Guardian Angel

9 What a Gift

10 Vikings

11 Forgive a Girl

About the band:

INSAMMER is one of Sweden’s most promising metal bands, combining dark, pulsating Nordic grooves with Eastern European lyricism and melodic romanticism. Their live shows throb with emotional energy; Vika’s voice ranges from a whisper to a full-throated growl, melding with the instruments as verses explode into churning, hypnotic choruses and pounding, crowd-mesmerizing riffs. The group calls their sound transfusion metal, a heavy mixture of alternative rock and nu metal, which evokes the shifting musical styles and feelings that pour over them and infuse their performances.

The band was created in Stockholm by vocalist Vika and guitarist Dennis Wise, whose collaboration began at a music institute in Uppsala, Sweden. The name InSammer was inspired by The Door Into Summer, a science fiction novel by Robert Heinlein. The current lineup also features virtuoso guitarist Oleg Izotov, bassist Nikita Simonov, and world-class drummer Alex Karpukhin.

Germany’s KLABAUTAMANN announces details of ‘Numbered’ vinyl release!

Germany’s KLABAUTAMANN Announces Details of “Numbered” Vinyl Release

Teutonic progressive black metal pioneer KLABAUTAMANN has announced that its latest album “Numbered” – released as digipak, streaming, and digital download on December 17, 2021 via Zeitgeister – will also be available in a 12” vinyl limited edition from May 1, after completing a successful crowdfunding campaign.

Having transformed into a solo project after Florian Troyka’s departure in 2019, KLABAUTAMANN mastermind Tim Steffens released a kind of concept album around the topic that all things in life are actually limited, numbered, a contemplation deeply rooted in the songwriter’s own experiences of loss and grief that he had to deal with in the recent years. Thus this album represents a more conceptual take than the previous ones, offering a more homogeneous and denser sound, atmosphere and some kind of story line that can even be partially inferred from the song titles.

Numbered” would never have seen the light of day in the final shape without all the guest musicians and other contributors that Steffens invited – also countering the state of isolation that the pandemic often left us in by initiating a versatile and vibrantly creative process. Bringing together such gifted musicians like Anna Murphy (CELLAR DARLING, ex-ELUVEITIE)Andreas Maerz (STEORRAH)Marlon Drescher (MALUS) and Stephan Wehrbein – to name only a few – and integrating their respective parts so smoothly that the album becomes much more than a mere assemblage of parts can be also considered an essential aspect of the artistic process involved in the creation of this album. This was also facilitated by the impeccable, powerful mixing (Anna Murphy) and mastering (Tom Kvålsvoll) of the album.

In the words of the artists involved, “Numbered” is an eclectic journey between darkness and light, beauty and beast; it’s an island behind the fog, new waves from dark waters, or a life resonating from within. It’s a mirror to the fears, depression and everyday questions. Mature music that grows on you.

Numbered” proves that KLABAUTAMANN doesn’t have to hide behind the genre masters like Opeth or Enslaved, who were often cited by critics for reference. They shouldn’t compete either as they can claim their own narrow niche.

Everything in life is numbered – that’s what makes it precious.
