(review) Malaise-Demo 2019(Hardcore For The Losers)

Malaise are new hardcore band from Vienna, Austria. This is their demo released on tape with Hardcore For The Losers. I listened and reviewed for our zine.

There are four songs on this demo, meaning intro plus three songs. The music in the songs is not very fast, but more midtempo a bit harsh hardcore, but with very audible punk, mainly streetpunk influences. This is not your metalcore crap that tries to be hardcore nowadays, but pure hardcore punk with balls. The lyrics are personal as I can understand and deal with usual hardcore themes. The only faster song on the record is Debris while Dust of Death and Parasite are more slower but great songs. Good hardcore and good demo tape.

Italian underground scene is full of excellent bands of all genres and Goofy Head are a band just to my liking. They play melodic punk and play it fast, some call it Ramonescore, in the vein of Teenage Bottlerocket, The Lillingtons, Screeching Weasel…meaning fast paced drums, beautiful vocal and guitar melodies and three chords punk, ready, steady, go! The lyrics to the songs are horror and sci fi inspired in many songs, but also have a lot humour in them. This band must surely sound super live, so I would definitely have to catch them somewhere when they play gigs. This is feel good record to return smile to your weary face on this hot Summer days. Recommended songs: Evil Sweet, Scream Queen Chica, Now And Again.

These guys are hailing from Italy and are interesting because they are playing kind of different music than we are used to, meaning their music is very dirty, it reminds me a bit of a mixture between New Orleans muddy bajou bluesy sludge Sabbatesque sound mixed with your raw version of punkrock thus creating cool song structures. There are 11 songs on this record and each one is different and interesting to listen to, making record not boring is only plus in my eyes. There are faster, more straightforward songs like Fire, but there are also more slower ones, like beautiful melodic and atmospheric The Gate which is for me absolutely one of the highlights on this record. Black Snake is also one of my personal favorites on the record combining raw energy of punk and guitar prowess of rock and blues. Not to discover just all, you will have to get the record and find out for yourself and discover the uniqueness of this band.
