(interview) MISSSTAND: We all know that punk is the best thing in the world, but there are still so many things going wrong in the scene.

Missstand from Austria delivered a killer hardcore punk set on this year´s Tepih na Paleti festival in Slovenia, so it was about time that I talked to them a bit for this zine.

YOU GUYS HAVE BEEN AROUND FOR A WHILE, NOW FOR MORE THAN 10 YEARS FOR SURE. CAN YOU SAY, WHAT WAS THE LOWEST POINT OF THE PUNKROCK SCENE YOU SAW AND WITNESSED AS A BAND AND WHAT WAS ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS FOR YOU AS A BAND?

Hey Davor! First of all, we wanna say thank you for getting the chance to answer your questions. Like you said, we are doing this band for 10 years now. We’re celebrating this jubilee this October in Austria within a few shows. To be honest, we are very privileged to have the opportunity to play in this band for such a long time. Many bands we got to know along these 10 years have already broken up, which is sad. We are still good friends and enjoy every show we can play. We always want to record some new songs and want to go on tour. It’s so nice that you can have so much fun and meet so many nice people by doing the thing you love. And regarding to your question, in the scene it’s like in your private life, there’s always up and downs.

YOU SING IN GERMAN LANGUAGE. COULD YOU HAVE DONE MORE IF YOU SUNG ONLY IN ENGLISH? I PERSONALLY THINK THAT IT IS AWESOME TO SING IN YOUR NATIVE LANGUAGE BUT IF A BAND WANTS TO REACH MORE AUDIENCE WORLDWIDE, IS IT POSSIBLE TO REACH THEM WITH GERMAN LYRICS?

Good question. When we started doing this band, it was clear to us, to sing in German, because most of the bands we listened to, also sang in German language. There’s a huge scene in German speaking countries of German singing bands. It’s called Deutschpunk. We always wanted to make a Deutschpunkband, so we never considered singing in English. But I think by singing in German language it’s much more difficult to play gigs in non-German speaking countries. But in every country there are DIY scenes and I think if you’re focusing on it, it would also be possible to play shows worldwide. I think if people see that you’re into the DIY thing, it’s not important in what language you sing your songs.

WHEN PLAYING LIVE, DO YOU THINK THAT BAND SHOULD TALK BETWEEN THE SONGS AND EXPLAIN THE MESSAGE BEHIND THE MUSIC? I THINK THAT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT FOR HARDCORE PUNK BAND TO INTERACT WITH THE CROWD AT GIGS, NOT ONLY TO ACT LIKE THEY ARE ON REHEARSAL. WHAT IS YOUR OPINION ON THAT?

In my opinion every band has to decide how they act on a stage. There are a lot of bands which have good political statements between the songs, and they can reach a lot of people. But I also like hardcore punk bands which play their 20 minutes without any sayings. It depends from band to band. But in general, I like bands that make political statements.

THERE HAS BEEN SOME TIME FROM THE RELEASE OF YOUR CURRENT ALBUM, HOW WAS THE FEEDBACK? IS IT IMPORTANT FOR ANY SELF RESPECTING BAND TO BRING ALONG SOME MERCH WHEN TOURING? MERCH OFTEN SAVES THE BAND WHEN TOURING DOESN´T IT?

We released our current album „I Can’t Relax in Hinterland“ on September 1st 2017, which is now a year ago. We got so many positive reviews after releasing it. People wrote us nice messages and ordered the album, so that the first press is already running out after one year. Which is very nice for us and we didn’t expect this. Of course, we are making this music because we love it, but it’s always nice if people can relate to it and like the stuff you’re making. We also always have some merchandise with us. And yeah, if you’re touring merch is really helping that the tour isn’t turning into a financial disaster. But also, many people like to wear band shirts. Including myself.

HOW IS THE POLITICAL SITUATION IN AUSTRIA FROM YOUR POINT OF VIEW? DO YOU GUYS THINK THAT EUROPE IS SLOWLY BUT SURELY HEADING TO HELL? IN MY COUNTRY, THAT IS CROATIA, I WITNESS THE REBIRTH OF FASCISM, PRIMITIVE IDEAS, VAIN POPULISM AND BLAMING SOMEONE FOR WORKERS MISERY AND HOPELESSNESS. IT ALL REMIND TOO MUCH OF THE 1930S DOESN˙ T IT?

Since the last election Austria is governed by right wing extremists, which label themselves as a liberal rightwing. But they are passing laws, that are just focusing on making the rich even richer and cutting down every social support for the poorer ones, especially for asylum seekers. They are closing the European borders and are celebrating themselves as heroes for doing so. But the consequence of these closed borders are thousands of people dying in the Mediterranean Sea. And the people in Austria don’t even care about that. Asylum seekers are labelled by right wing politicians and media as rapists and terrorists and many people get scared by that bullshit. So yeah, Europe is slowly heading to hell. And if we don’t stand up against this shit, 1930 is really coming again.

HOW MUCH IS DIY ASPECT IMPORTANT TO YOU AS A BAND? DO YOU HAVE A MANAGER? DO YOU HAVE SOME LABEL DOING THE WORK AND PR FOR YOU? CAN YOU SAY FOR MISSSTAND THAT YOU HAVE A STRONG ETHICAL PHILOSOPHY BEHIND THE BAND?

Without DIY this band wouldn’t exist for this long. Everything we do is DIY in some way. We book our shows by ourselves, all of our designs are made by us, we released our first two albums by ourselves, and so on. For the last album we got the chance to release it on „Aggressive Punk Produktionen“, which is a very political label with many great German punk bands. Most of them were the first bands we listened to, when we got into the scene. Matze, the owner of the label, is such a great guy and he really knows what he is doing and is always very supportive. But in general, it wouldn’t be possible to have a punk band without DIY. Beside the band, we are also organizing shows for touring bands. Regarding the question about the ethical philosophy behind the band, all three of us are living a vegan lifestyle. But that’s just a personal decision. But it’s also very important for us, that our merchandise is produced as ethical as possible.

ONE USUAL ZINE QUESTION. HOW IS THE SCENE IN YOUR AREA OF AUSTRIA? YOU´RE FROM KLAGENFURT, RIGHT? ANY VENUES, GIGS, BANDS?

Originally, we were living in and around Klagenfurt, but in the last year we all moved to Graz, which is about 150 kilometers in the north-east of Klagenfurt. Many young people are moving from Klagenfurt to Graz or Vienna, because of their study, their work, or in general for a better lifestyle.
The scene in Graz is much bigger than it is in Klagenfurt and there are much more venues, you can organize or visit a show. But it was also very important for us to stay as long as possible in Klagenfurt and keep the scene there alive, by organizing around 40 shows in the last years. Graz on the other hand has a very vivid scene. There are many bands and many motivated people. There are also so many vegan restaurants, it’s like a vegan heaven, compared to the situation in Klagenfurt haha. The best place to visit in Graz is the SUb. The SUb is a self-organized, non-commercial venue, which had some struggles in the past months. But it’s re-opening in October. If you are in Graz, you should visit the SUb. (www.subsubsub.at)

DO YOU THINK THAT PUNKROCK HAS BECOME LESS THREAT AND LESS SHARP ON EDGES AND MORE BUSSINESS LIKE AND CORPORATIVE? ON THE OTHER HAND IS IT WORTH SPREADING ANTIFA, ANTISEXIST, ANTIHOMOPHOBIA MESSAGES ON THE PUNK GIGS? I MEAN, THE PUNKS SHOULD KNOW ALL OF THAT AND LIVE WITH THOSE IDEAS IN THEIR HEARTS. UNFORTUNATELY, THERE IS A LOT OF DARK AND UGLY THINGS HAPPENING ALSO IN THE PUNK SCENE WHICH SHOULD BE FREE OF THOSE THINGS, DON´T YOU THINK?

I don’t think that punk has become less a threat. But other music scenes, hip hop for example, are far more provocative and are getting more media coverage. Also the typical punk style isn’t that provocative in 2018, where everybody can color their hair, or have tattoos or piercings, which is getting more and more socially accepted. You can walk into a bank and the person behind the shelter can sport a nose ring and it’s totally normal. But besides that, the pop culture, especially in Germany, is also getting political more and more. Many acts have left wing views and communicate their views at their concerts. And I think it’s always important to communicate your political beliefs with the crowd, regardless if it’s a hip hop concert, or a punk concert. In every scene there are people, who didn’t care about that stuff, but maybe will do so, after thinking about what the people said on stage. We all know that punk is the best thing in the world, but there are still so many things going wrong in the scene. There has to be much more awareness about antisexism and antihomophobia. But also it’s getting better and better over the last few years.

ARE YOU GUYS VIOLENT? HOW FAR DOES YOUR TOLERANCE REACH? IN A GIVEN SITUATION WOULD YOU REACH FOR VIOLENT ANSWERS WHEN PROVOKED OR ARE YOU TOTAL PACIFISTS?

It’s important to stand up against right wing extremism, no matter how. The last years showed, that being tolerant against right wing views and giving them a stage (in talkshows, or other forms) has only one effect. The intolerant kill off every discussion with the tolerant ones, using rhetorical tricks or other things. They do everything to make their views appear in the best possible way. If you see Nazis in the pedestrian zone handing out flyers, call some friends and stop them from doing so. I don’t care if it’s a violent way, or a creative way, by cutting them off from the other pedestrians with umbrellas. Be creative, but don’t just walk away.

THAT IS ALL FOR THE FIRST TIME. IN THE END, SAY SOME WISE MESSAGE FROM MISSSTAND TO THE READERS OF THIS ZINE!

Support your local punk scene, support your local Antifa and keep macho bullshit out of punk!

(interview)YOUNG HEARTS:”It is a shame that we put so many time in arguing whose fault instead of working out a durable solution.”

I saw and heard Young Hearts for the first time at this year˙s Punk Rock Holiday when they played Beach Stage on Friday and was immediately blown away by their awesome and energetic show. So, it was natural to talk a little with the guys for this zine. Read on!

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOUNG HEARTS TO THE READERS OF THIS ZINE WHO HAVE NEVER HEARD OF YOU?

-We are Young Hearts, a band from Antwerp in Belgium. We play fast punkrock/melodic hardcore. We have been doing this for about 4 years now, since 2014. We released an EP, Now’s Your Time, in 2015, and an album called In The Middle You’ll Find Balance in 2017. Both records were released by the Belgian record label Thanks But No Thanks Records.

WE JUST RETURNED FROM PUNK ROCK HOLIDAY. WE SAW YOUR AWESOME SET THERE AT THE BEACH STAGE. HOW WAS IT FOR YOU PLAYING THIS FINE FESTIVAL? WAS YOUR GIG A PART OF THE TOUR OR ONLY ONE OFF GIG AT PRH? YOUR SINGER TALKED BETWEEN THE SONGS. HOW MUCH IS INTERACTION WITH THE AUDIENCE IMPORTANT FOR YOU AS A BAND?

-Punkrock Holiday was amazing! We have never been at PRH before but heard so much great stuff about the festival that we were planning on going this year. When we were later asked to play the Beach Stage, we were very excited to be a part of this crazy line-up. There were so many great bands performing the Beach Stage (like Almeida, Adrenalized, This Is A Standoff and our friends from Charlie Bit My Finger) that it was an honor to be listed between these bands. We did not play a lot of shows this summer, so it was a lot fun to drive all the way to Slovenia to play a 30 minute set. As we were not really looking for other shows to play, we wanted to keep it an exclusive show.

We were really looking forward on going and we have put a lot of time in preparing the show. But when we got there it was even better than expected. We had a great time just hanging around, making new friends, and we were able to play a good set at the Beach Stage. Although it was day 4 of a very warm festival edition we could still feel the energy from the audience, which was amazing!

Our singer always talks between songs… We try to keep him down a bit because we prefer playing instead of talking on stage, but he always takes time to say a few things between songs. We believe interaction with the audience is really important to include everybody in a show. Especially when you’re playing this kind of music, we believe it is great to get everybody involved and have a party on – and off – stage during our set. A band with a singer that has no interaction with his audience is pretty boring to look … Unless you’re Maynard Keenan from (Tool, A Perfect Circle), then it is allowed to hide in the back and say no more than three words during a show.

HOW MUCH ARE THE LYRICS IMPORTANT FOR YOU IN THE WHOLE PICTURE? DO YOU CONSIDER YOURSELVES TO BE A POLITICAL BAND?

-We’re not a political band at all. We believe there is a whole lot wrong with the world today, but we don’t want to write songs about that. We believe that getting together with a lot of like-minded people and playing some music is already a good start to make a difference.

38912430_251963778791871_1354699227086716928_n

Tom, our singer, usually writes the lyrics by himself and then brings his ideas to the rehearsals. He usually writes about every day life, things that are going through his head, fun word plays to start writing with… So no, the lyrics are not the most important part for us I believe.

SINGING IN ENGLISH VS YOUR NATIVE LANGUAGE? WHAT ARE THE PROS AND WHAT ARE THE CONS?

-We sing in English, although our native language is Dutch. There are many pro’s of singing in your own language… You know the language by heart, so it is way easier to find the exact words to express your idea. You know all tiny little language tricks to twist and turn the words, the intonation, rhythm… to get exactly what you want. But Belgians are a little weird in that way I believe. There are not many Belgian punkrock or metal bands that sing in Dutch. There are a few, but for some reason they are more comedy related bands. So mostly people sing in English.

The big con of course is that it is harder to write in another language. Besides that, you also really need to check your vocabulary and grammar, or you’ll make a complete ass of yourself.

CAN YOU STILL REMEMBER YOUR FIRST GIG YOU ATTENDED AS A FAN THAT SOMEHOW DEFINED YOU AS A PERSON AND MADE YOU START A BAND AND BE ACTIVE IN THE SCENE?

-Yes, I do. Although it is difficult to define what got me in „the scene“. We are very different in what we listen to, and we listen to a lot of different styles. The first shows I saw were at Pukkelpop in ’98, a festival in Belgium. I remember seeing Rancid and Lagwagon that year, but also remember The Beastie Boys, DJ Shadow, Squarepusher and a lot of weird electronic music that blew me away at that moment. My first indoor show was a Deftones show, and that is one I will always remember. And the first time I saw Biohazard and Slipknot at a festival…I was really blown away with the energy those bands were showing on stage. ! I think those were the shows that pushed me into playing loud music. I have always listened to grunge and rock, but the energy at these shows made me love heavy music even more.

HAS EUROPEAN UNION FAILED? DID THE MEMBER STATES SHOW THEIR TRUE FACES CONSIDERING THE REFUGEES, HAS BARBED WIRE ON THE BORDERS MARKED THE BEGINNING OF THE END OF THE EU? THE RIGHT WING IS ON THE RISE IN EUROPE, HOW ARE THINGS IN BELGIUM? HOW IS LIFE IN BELGIUM IN GENERAL?

-Life in Belgium is great… Not for everyone I suppose, just like in other countries, but life is generally good in Belgium. I don’t believe the EU has failed. I believe that we have failed as people to find better solutions for all issues we are facing today. Not only right wing parties and refugees, but also the environmental issues, the plastic waste in the oceans, the extinction of species, global warming… It is a shame that we put so many time in arguing whose fault instead of working out a durable solution. I personally believe that, as a species, we have to hit our head against the wall one more time to see the light, to see how we can get along with each other and our planet.

LAST YEAR YOU RELEASED YOUR FULL LENGTH ALBUM. DID IT COME OUT ON SOME LABEL? HOW ARE YOU SATISFIED WITH THE FEEDBACK? DO YOU GUYS TOUR A LOT? HOW DOES TOURING REFLECT ON YOUR PERSONAL LIVES AND DAYTIME JOBS?

-We released our album – In The Middle You’ll Find Balance – at Thanks But No Thanks Records in Belgium. It’s a small independent label that focuses on punkrock and other more alternative. They have some great bands on their roster, you should check them out at their website (www.thanksbutnothanksrecords.com).

It was a trip to release a first full album. We have always put a lot of effort in writing songs, but when you finally set a date to record, master and release an album, it all suddenly gets real. It was an intense period, but we are happy with the result. We had a lot of great feedback from around Europe (and beyond, thank god for internet!), so we were happy with what we achieved… But on the other hand we’re very critical for ourselves, so we want to do better with our next album that we will be recording next year.

We all have “real” jobs and families, so it is not always easy to combine your daytime job and family life with playing shows. We often have to discuss what and when we can do something to get things planned, but that is part of the whole thing I suppose. It would be great to be able to put your time and efforts completely in your music and what you do as a band, but at this point we have a good balance between both work and music. It would be nice though to play more shows next year and do some more shows abroad. It’s always good fun to be away with the boys and play some shows!

HAVE YOU EVER PLAYED WITH OR HEARD OF SOME CROATIAN HARDCORE PUNK BAND? WE HAVE A GREAT SCENE OVER HERE.

-To be honest… and a bit ashamed, not really… We have never yet had the chance to play with a Croatian band. But if you can hook us up some shows in Croatia, we would be happy to change that!

HAVE YOU EVER USED VIOLENCE IF ATTACKED? HOW MUCH VIOLENCE CAN YOU USE IN SELF DEFENCE? IS THERE SUCH THING AS OVERUSE OF VIOLENCE? DO YOU BELIEVE IN PACIFISM?

-I have never fought before. Not because I believe in pacifism, but I have always been able to talk my way out of a tricky situation. But when needed, I think I am able to defend myself. How much violence? Bit of a weird question, but I think just enough to make sure your adversary decides to back off.

IS THERE SUCH THING AS UNITY? WAS THERE EVER SUCH THING? IS THAT WORD ONLY A PART OF THE HARDCORE PUNK ARCADIA MYTH?

-I think there is unity as long as everybody gets what he or she needs. Like at a festival, where everybody is having a good time, listening to music they like and drink some beers with their friends But as soon as shit hits the fan, I believe anarchy and chaos are not always that far away.

THAT´S IT FOR THE FIRST TIME. FOR THE END, TYPICAL FANZINE QUESTION, WHAT ARE THE PLANS FOR YOUNG HEARTS IN THE IMMEDIATE FUTURE? THANKS FOR THE ´VIEW!

-We’re currently writing new songs for our next album. We plan on recording early next year, but there is still a lot to do. And then of course we want to release the best album that we are able to make and hope that people enjoy our music so we can play some cool shows in different interesting new places. We’re good friends and we have a lot of fun when on the road, so we’ll plan on doing just that as much as possible next year!

Thanks for the interview, and the feedback on our PRH show!
