(book) Star Wars: Phasma

Besides punk hardcore, my all time love is Star Wars. Besides movies and tv shows, there is whole world of expanded universe through books that I discovered as I started reading and collecting those books.

I must say that I am more of a fan regarding books and SW timeline that came out before Disney took over SW universum. Those books are now regarded as Star Wars Legends and books that are now out as Disney took over are called New Canon. As movie, books that come out are inferior to old ones. I don´t say that as grizzled fart which only mutters to himself, I am a fan who has also all new movies originals dvds in my collection proudly besides old ones and gave them many chances, but I must say, only Rogue One is in my opinion worth SW greatness of all new movies.

Captain Phasma is one of not enough explored characters of First Order and this book is a novel about her, how she came to be Captain Phasma, from her life as Skyre on nuclear devastated wasteland planet, to meeting General Hux Senior and trying to survive the wasteland to go to space and fulfill her destiny. This book has the same problem as all SW newer books. Parts of it are interesting and make you wanna read more and more and then comes last third which is too confusing, too fast like author wanted to finish it by all means as soon as possible. Characters are too shallow, too little explained and explored. Action scenes are okay, but could have been better and the ending leaves more open questions for sequel and explanations of some missing parts. Unfortunately, this one could have been so much better.

(review) Watain – The Agony & Ecstasy of Watain (Nuclear Blast)

One thing must be said, much respect to these Swedes for being true to themselves and keeping the bloody flag of melodic epic black metal from North alive and high. After immense void left by the demise of Dissection there was a long time no successor, who would take the fallen sword and lead the charge. When Watain started their fight, I knew there was something special about them. Now, sixth opus is upon us. Ten songs of aggressive black metal with some thrash undertones, but done in that Swedish way, with melodic epic guitar work, blast beats mixing with more slower atmospheric parts and Erik Danielsson´s trademark vocals that are snarling yet understandable, not dissimilar to late great Jon Nodtveidt. But, although Watain reminds of that legendary band, they are black metal for the new dark millenia. Besides more aggressive songs like excellent The howling, there is also some slower, but so strong songs like Serimosa, one of my personal favorites on this record. Its rolling melody sounds like thunder on the dark mountain. Black cunt is another lovely song I must mention, very technical with lots of rhythm change and bringing kind of darkened sensuality from the other worlds. The sheer ferocity of Leper´s grace reminded me of early Immortal, Battles in the north era of songwriting, no holds barred black metal attack. After an instrumental intermezzo Not sun, nor man, nor god, there is a second chapter and this brings out the heavy artillery or the best this album has to offer. Songs like Before the cataclysm or We remain with its haunting clean vocal melody, are lesson in darkness. This is for sure one of the best black metal releases this year.

(review) Claudio Simonetti – Demons (Original Soundtrack)

Claudio Simonetti (born 1952) is Italian composer, musician and keyboardist for legendary prog band Goblin which delivered many great tunes and soundtracks for Italian horror movies. Simonetti´s specialty is music for horror movies and he composed some really great tunes from 1970 onward working with Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava, Lucio Fulci, Ruggero Deodato, Umberto Lenzi or Sergio Martino.

This is soundtrack for Lamberto Bava´s fantastic 1985 classic, one of the best that Italian genre has to offer. I still remember the movie poster when this one played in my hometown back in the second half of the eighties. There was a cinema there called Dom (meaning Home in Croatian) which showed old school karate/kung fu movies, Italian Mad Max clones, sword and sorcery movies and horror. I was scared as little kid with tagline ‘Cities will become graves’ I think it was like that or something. Years later, this movie never ceases to amaze, along with superb soundtrack which is a mixture of electronic music, synth prevailed melodies, almost happy main tune called Demon which is spooky along with kind of jolly. Miniatures like Threat and Cruel Demon are sure to make perfect atmospheric intermezzos between the main body of the album. There are couple of versions of the main song, for me especially great being piano version bringing along even more heavy horror atmosphere and reminding me why I love this movie so much. Besides prog influences and electronica, there are couple of pop influenced melodies here and there in the greater picture. Great soundtrack to fantastic movie!
