(record review)FAIR DO´S-“Leopards”(Lockjaw Records)

Straight outta Manchester come Fair Do´s with their awesome new album on Lockjaw Records and I listened to the record and reviewed it for this webzine.

Fair Dos Leopard Art pre release

UK has an awesome melodic hardcore punk scene with bands like The Human Project, Avas, Darko coming to mind immediately. Manchester´s Fair Do˙s were formed in 2008. and “Leopards” is their high anticipated debut album. It contains ten song of crushing and uncompromising technical and fast melodic hardcore punk with political and smart lyrics.

First, besides music, for me the vocals are very important and this band has it all. The screams, the anger, the melody and style being qualities of their singer, one of the best in the genre right now. There are couple of songs that I must mention as my highlights from this album. First of them is “Distress Call” because it has a fine line between being an angry screamed hardcore song and melodic punk anthem. “Cowabunga” is a continuation of that style having one of the best underlining guitar melodies that I have heard in the last couple of years. “Closing In” is for me the best song on this record and made me listen to it again and again with its neck breaking speed and melodic ferocity. “Hostile Company” feels like a crouching tiger coiled and waiting to attack and tear you apart with its structured riffs and melodies. The last song I will mention as being awesome is “Lose My Touch” with fast and so heartfelt chorus. This is an excellent album, so order your copy and see the guys play live somewhere, because this material is certainly great live.

(record review)SMRT RAZUMA-“Demo”

Osijek is a Croatian city with great history concerning underground bands with many excellent punk hardcore, noise and metal coming from there, for example let us just mention Debeli Precjednik, Gužva u 16-ercu, Why Stakla, COG, Grupa tvog života and more…

Today is a different story, some of the old underground fighters still make a good fight there and play in bands but the newer bands are not present there. SMRT RAZUMA(english The Death of Reason) is the new band comprised of old school dudes and this is their first demo. The record contains 4 songs of angry and rawer hardcore punk with many thrash influences. The music is fast and aggressive and the vocals are angry shouting. The lyrics of the songs are in Croatian language so if you don´t understand Croatian you won`t understand shit. But I can tell you that they are in the right place being politically engaged and covering themes from poverty, depression, sexism, nationalism and general greyness of the area where the guys come from. This is great and energetic stuff to take a break a bit from the melodic side of things. For me the best song on the record is “Nikad više sretna” having a wicked guitar line that I love.

(record review)SPIDER-“S/T”

Are you ready for some old school Californian punk as fuck that will melt your face off? Spider will give you just that! Their new e.p. is out just in time to cover their European tour during which the guys plan to promote the record. I listened to the record and reviewed it for this webzine.

The record contains 6 songs of classic sounding Californian punk like a lost son between Black Flag, Circle Jerks and The Germs. “PCE” is an excellent song that made me fist banging during the excellent anthemic chorus which reminded me why I love such bands. “New Junk II” really reminded me of the best Circle Jerks songs with slamming and pogo mayhem parts just made for live gigs. “Barcode Baby” is a dirty punkrock harsh song in the vein of Poison Idea and for me this one is the best song on the record. “Shooting Stars/Get Caught” didn˙t work well somehow with me, the vocals in the first part of the song and the rockish atmosphere just not make my cup of tea, but happily in the other half the song evolves into a much better beast. “Can˙t Control” has that nervous Black Flag vibe, that makes you wanna hug and break something at the same time. “Pleasure Fold” has a very catchy guitar melody in the beggining of the song and this song is just beautiful dirty punk anthem. So, if you want to hear the old school Cali punk as fuck, this record is just made for you. Of course, check out Spider live on their tour because it will be awesome.
