(record review)MATALOBOS-“Until time has lost all meaning”(Concreto Records)

Matalobos are hailing from Mexico, this is their second studio opus out on Concreto Records. I listened and reviewed the record for this webzine, so here are my impressions.

Formed in 2014., Matalobos play an interesting mix of doom and melodic death metal. This is an interesting record to listen to. Why? Because when I saw that there are only three songs on, I thought that it´s going to be again one of those long and pretty boring funeral doom records. Now I am glad that I was wrong. “Of ghosts and yearning” starts as a typical doom song but evolves into excellent melodic death metal song, not unlike some European bands of that genre, which is no wonder since legendary Dan Swanö at Unisound did the mastering for this record. This is the longest song on the record but with three or four interesting parts in the song structure never gets boring. “In flesh engraved” is a beautiful, almost whole melodic death metal song with faster parts and energy that fills your body while listening. “La luz de dia muerte” is an atmospheric instrumental with trumpet adding to the atmosphere of some film noire in this song and it is awesome. Great record!

(record review)WOMBRIPPER-“From the depths of flesh”(Redefining Darkness Records)

I already talked about how great Russian underground scene is, and for me is always great to find some new bands from that scene and become a fan. This time I listened to the record by WOMBRIPPER and reviewed it for this webzine.

I must admit that I have never heard of this band prior to this record. It contains 12 songs of utter destruction and rolling old school death metal. The song guitar structures are dirty but have some nice hidden melodies underneath like in “Rest…” and you can also feel nod to the thrash metal influences in many songs. The music is aggressive but it also has some emotion behind it, it awoke spirit of depression and despair, but also anger and willingness to fight back. You can´t go wrong with songs like “Immolation rites” and “The suicidal recreation” with all the raw and primordial magic behind the songs. This is a great old school death metal album for all the fans and an impressive debut.

(record review)URZE DE LUME-” As Árvores Estão Secas E Não Têm Folhas”( Equilibrium Music)

Urze De Lume just released their new, third album and I am really glad that I was able to listen to the album and reviewed it for this webzine.

cover_1521461271328431

Hailing from Portugal, Urze De Lume creates their music as a tribute to the past, days gone by and the cultural and musical tradition of Iberian peninsula. On this album, they created the second and final chapter in band´s ode to Autumn as a dark and rainy but also beautiful season when nature dies and the cycle of life starts once again. Although the song structures are mainly based on guitar work the band also heavily uses Iberian ethnic instruments such as bagpipes, war drums, horns and various ancient stringed instruments like for example rebec. The songs are mainly instrumental with vocals being scarce and mainly spoken or whispered and in my opinion not being really important to the music itself. Since the formation of the band in 2009. they became one of the best kept secrets of the Portuguese and European dark folk and the underground scene in general. Each of the 12 songs is the beautiful and darkened soundtrack to the walk in the woods and exploring and becoming one with nature in these times of fast living and living only to create money, spiritual pipe dreams and fast enjoyment. These guys prove with their music that there is the other side to the living. Each of the song titles is in the Portugese language so I can´t really understand the meaning of the song titles, but the music on this beautiful album speaks for itself!
