Western Addiction refuse to be confined to any preexisting genres. Their sound hop-scotches between blistering hard-core, cryptic lyrics, and an anxiety cyclone of moody rhythms. It is precisely these emotional juxtapositions that make their band so unique. Today, we’re thrilled to divert your attention to their lead single, “They Burned Our Paintings,” streaming via YouTube, Spotify, or anywhere that you get your digital fix. The track is lifted from their third full-length, Frail Bray, out May 15th, and is available for pre-order.

Working for the first time with producer Jack Shirley (Deafheaven, Jeff Rosenstock, Gouge Away), Western Addiction tracked Frail Bray live to tape—another first for them—at the Atomic Garden in Oakland in late 2019. Guest musicians feature Darius Koski (Swingin’ Utters) on viola, violin, piano, tambourine, and backup vocals on their track, “Wildflowers of Italy.” Another FAT family guest appearance is the powerhouse, Brenna Red, from The Last Gang! Brenna provides backup vocals for “The Leopard and the Juniper,” “Frail Bray,” and “Rose’s Hammer II.”

Vocalist Jason Hall expounds on their latest effort below:

With a cosmic shot of pure irony, our new record, Frail Bray, is about…hope. It’s easy to be terrible. It’s hard to be thoughtful, hopeful, and kind. Let’s try. The first single, “They Burned Our Paintings,” is about degenerate art in the 1920s and 30s.

(review) GUMX-Bust A Nut

cover

I must admit that I don´t know many bands from Asian melodic punk/skatepunk scene, but those that I heard are really awesome. GUMX are Seoul based South Korean band and this record contains six great songs. The music of GUMX is fast and energetic melodic punk hardcore/skatepunk, well played and having great song arrangements. What I also love, the songs are in English and well spoken, not broken English like some bands have hehe. The vocal and guitar melodies are nicely done, backing vocal harmonies just make you smile with pleasure while listening and the singer´s voice is so sweet, so much melodic yet dramatic and I just love it. The songs that I recommend to you are Fuck Lee, Komm Susser Tod(title in German, but sung in English) and The Answer. This is a super record from all over other side of the world. Music unites us and kilometers don´t mean a thing while listening to the great record.

ABOUT THE SONG AND VIDEO:

Lauren (vocals/guitar): “If I Fall is my interpretation of the battle I have in my head which comes with being in love whilst having a mental illness. This song means crazy loads to me because Alexei sings all the backing vocals and I wrote it when I felt like I was pushing him away.
“We DIYd the video in our practice space. We used a 5 year old iPhone taped to a mic stand and edited on a 5 year old Android phone for balance. We love how it turned out and feel it represents the 4 of us perfectly in both personality and collective bank balances.”
ABOUT LA MOXIE
“We are Lauren (singing and guitar) Nathaniel (drums and enthusiasm) Alexei (guitar and cynicism) and Ryan (bass and gratuitous hair metal intro speeches). We’re from Birmingham and would self describe as skate punk. Tho we’d shrug and agree with emopunk or poppunk and honestly, Lauren’s the only one who skates. We’ve only been doing this since last summer and we’ve been lucky enough to play with The Bombpops, Petrol Girls, The Creepshow and Nervus.”
