(review) Original Sharks – ‘Live At Savaria Studios’

Original Sharks are hailing from Brooklyn, New York, but they don’t play NYHC, they play melodic punk like it was played in the nineties on all those glorious bands and releases but also with some newer emo and pop punk thrown in here and there for good measure. There are eight songs on this little release, being quite short but effective. There you have your fast melodic skate punk in songs like ‘Old Standards’ or ‘Kit Carson’ but there are also slower more mid tempo heart rendering emotions of ‘Mudhound’. Vocals are a bit sad sounding, I mean like feeling sadness when singing and they are great. Backing vocal harmonies are just in right places and lyrics are personal, but written in a smart way and you can totally read them and think about and relate in your personal life, which once more confirms that music is life, life is music and we are in this scene because of that. This is a great band, so go support and throw some love their way. Record is ‘name your price’ but I am sure band will appreciate any kind of support and love.

(REVIEW) COMPA-S/T

a0052453942_10

Compa are hardcore punk band hailing from Brooklyn, New York. This is their new release containing 6 songs of noisy, fast and ferocious hardcore punk with great lyrics covering themes of migrants, being poor, trying to survive in this wild capitalist world of slavery, fighting fascism and similar themes. The music is very dark and vocals are screaming but there is an occasional nice guitar melody behind all the harshness like in my favorite off this record called Brown. This is a short but sweet e.p., it is name your price on Bandcamp so go get this one and support your scene.

This band is hailing from New York and on this e.p. there are four songs of punk hardcore. What immediately came to my mind while listening to the record is the gritty, almost dark, urban sound of their music and production on this record. Reanimate is a beautiful punkrock song with and awesome anthem, melody and harsh atmosphere. Sleight of Hand is a fast, hardcore song made for pogo, slamming and moshing. The lyrics in all of the songs are personal with themes like, friendship and losing friends, love, emotions, urban life and coping with it….Watersnake is an ode to the urban life, and I saw all the pressure of living in the large city, life and dealing with it while listening to this beautiful poetic song. The title song is fast hardcore punk song with a lot of melody and the message that all of our enemies just make us stronger in our beliefs and our striving to do the things our way. Great record!
