(record review)ME AS WELL-Shipwrecks & Melodies

Karlovac, the town in Croatia, has always been fertile soil for underground scene, having an awesome amount of great bands with names like Kontra, Scud, Flaster of Disaster, NSIB and many others immediately coming to my mind. Me As Well are one of younger bands in that scene, with one e.p. and one full length album out prior to this record. Their great and energetic shows, built them respect and much love in the scene.

cover

This new e.p. contains 5 songs, three in English and two in Croatian language. The music is still that high energetic melodic hardcore with vocalists Maja and Leo forming an impressive melodic soundscape which makes goosebumps on my skin. I love both songs in Croatian(Lajavi Pas and Grad), being fast and melodic anthems with great lyrics and choruses that made me smile, hum and sing along. The title song is in my opinion one of the best songs MAW did until now, with calm beginning and then evolving to fast and melodic heartwarming song. The song called Reaction shows how powerful this band in fact is, both vocally and instrumentally. Echo is a nice miniature of melodic but furious hardcore. This is one of the best releases to come out of Croatia this year!

(record review)Kriva Istina-Manifest Pobune

Time for some more Croatian bands to grace the pages of this zine. If you don˙t believe in your local scene, you will never believe and change the global scene. Kriva Istina are from Slavonski Brod/Zagreb and this is their new album which I listened and reviewed for this zine.

This band is active now for years and they released one split record with Faak Am See and one album, so after some slight lineup changes, this is their new second album. I eagerly waited for this album after listening to the first single and kind of title track Manifest thousand times. Boy, I was not wrong. This is one of the best melodic hardcore punk albums to come out this year. It contains 11 songs of resistance, smart lyrics that leave you in depth thinking and above all awesome technical melodic hardcore skatepunk, not unlike Propagandhi and similar bands. The lyrics are in Croatian language and they deal with activism, making a difference, friendship, sexism and the whole record basically reflects the dark political situation that is happening in Croatia right now and leaves us with hope that there is still light in darkness and people who are striving to make a change and this world better for us all. If you are in energetic melodic positive hardcore punk, played fast with heart and soul, this record is just right one for you. Get this one!

(record review)Trophy Jump-Live at Kesbri Studios

Trophy Jump come from capitol of Croatia, Zagreb and are part of JeboTon collective. This is their newest release and I listened to the record and wrote a short review for this zine.

cover

This 3 songs were recorded in Bolton, UK during the band˙s first UK tour and they serve as a memorabilia from that tour and also as a teaser for the new material on which the band works right now. What I love about Trophy Jump is that they play no bullshit simple old school melodic skate/punkrock without complicating things. Don`t get me wrong, these guys know how to play and the material is awesome, but they this is not the music for the fans of more technical melodic punk escapades. The vocals kinda remind me of early Fat Mike in some songs, but a little more snotty but in combination with the music they sound good. Of the three tracks, the best one for me is Remete Hills, a nostalgic song about home and the neighbourhood and the city from where you come from. Also, get the first album on Bandcamp and check out qualitiy skatepunk melodic music.
