(review) Don`t sleep – turn the tide (mission two entertainment)

458156

Punk rock scene legend Dave Smalley (DYS, All, Down By Law, Dag Nasty…) is back forming this new band called Don`t Sleep with members of The Commercials and Junction. They just released new record with Mission Two Entertainment.

The new record contains 12 songs of fierce melodic punk rock with harsh edge, personal lyrics that anyone can relate to, beautiful melodies and Smalley sounds better and more convincing than ever and his voice did not falter for a note with years, like good wine hehe. This is mainly mid tempo punk rock but also there are some faster hardcore rapid fire outbursts like fantastic Abandoned Us. This band in fact sounds like an amalgamation of all Smalley˙s previous bands and efforts, so you just can not go wrong if you love melodic punk and you are looking for a great band to listen to over and over again. Good one. Recommended songs: We Remain, Abandoned Us, True North.

Victory Records Announces Signing of Don’t Sleep

thumbnail_image011

Victory Records is proud to announce the worldwide signing of Washington DC / Pennsylvania hardcore band DON’T SLEEP led by legendary frontman Dave Smalley (Dag Nasty, DYS, Down By Law, ALL), bassist Garrett Rothman, guitarists Tom McGrath, Tony Bavaria and Jim Bedorf on drums. DON’T SLEEP, who formed in 2017, play anthemic, harmony laden, meaningful, melodic and uncompromising hardcore. They are (in their own words), “Five friends playing hardcore and trying to make a positive impact on the world.”

“Victory Records has played such an integral role in the evolution of hardcore. While DON’T SLEEP is a new project, we all came up in the old school and have mad respect for the history of Victory Records,” comments Smalley. “After talking with Tony (Brummel, Victory founder) over the course of last year, we realized that he really connected with our vision for DON’T SLEEP and we honestly couldn’t think of a better fit for this band. We’re honored and humbled to be working with such an amazing label and unbelievably excited to be part of their family.”

The band has released two EPs, Don’t Sleep in 2017 (Unity Worldwide) and Bring The Light in 2018 (Reaper). Their full length Victory Records debut will be released this summer.

DON’T SLEEP has toured and shared stages with Shelter, Sick Of It All, Madball, Face To Face and performed on the final Vans Warped Tour in 2018. The band are currently in the studio recording their debut full length album with Grammy nominated producers Carson Slovak and Grant McFarland (August Burns Red, Everclear).

Dave sums things up perfectly with, “It is a new era for hardcore and I am really happy with it.”

We think that you will be too.

(record review)DAVE SMALLEY AND THE BANDOLEROS-Join The Outsiders

Dave Smalley, besides being punk hardcore legend and icon from his work with the legendary bands like Dag Nasty, DYS or Down By Law, is also one of the most hardworking guys in the scene. This time, I listened to the new record by Dave Smalley And The Bandoleros and reviewed it for this zine.

cover

This is a new band which Smalley formed with three Spaniards and one Argentinian dude to make some nice and crazy music. The record contains 11 songs of warm and melodic punkrock with hardcore excursions into faster songs like for example Eye Of Fire. I love the simple but smart sincerity of Better Make It Count and My Funeral Pyre, also the title song is awesome too! Who loved Dave˙s work with his previous and current bands will also love the music on this record. It is not complicated, on the contrary, this record takes us back to some simpler punkrock times that we sometimes lack in the scene nowadays and we definitely need to connect ourselves again with hardcore punk in our hearts and souls and ask ourselves, do we still believe in the values and the scene? I know I do! I still love hardcore, a lot! And I will carry this love until my last breath. This record is pure love!
