Two members of Portugal’s Gaerea, namely Guilherme Henriques – vocals/guitar and Pedro Soares – drums, decided to write an opus of heartfelt emotions and darkness and put it all in one long song called Disintegrate. The opus starts calmer, with post metal influenced guitar melody, a bit cold like in space with synth effects melody in the background preparing us of what’s to come. And that is, my ladies and gentlemen, perfect lesson in rolling death doom with growling death vocals, dark and melodic guitar wall of sound and doom procession drums played technically perfect to a note. The atmosphere is perfect and lyrics are about rising of an individual above things that bothered him/her until now, when he or she took all by heart but will rise now above all that darkness even it means to disintegrate and practically cease existence. This is a liberating music and opus. If you listen to it in darkness, close your eyes and let the music and words take you to soundscape vessel and fly you above all you will see how pathetic and needless are some of your worries and problems and how sometimes things need to be cut no matter it might cause pain or cease to exist in a way they existed before. Double bass drumming, some death and post metal influences add to the drama and melancholic guitar work on this opus. I can only congratulate you, because this one touched me deep, deep inside.
Zerfall are hailing from Italy and it is a relatively new band, but the members have served in the scene in entities such as Ras Algethi or Enoch and this is the new opus and it contains seven longer songs. Music of Zerfall can be described as blackened doom death metal with thundering distorted bass, many slower rolling drums parts of the songs and some post black metal influences. Special mention goes to keyboard work which is awesome, creating such bleak and horror atmosphere like in my personal favorite Symmetric Caustic Waves, which, although it is an instrumental is an atmospheric masterpiece. Listening to it I feel like walking through the night time street with that uneasy feeling that someone is watching you from the shadows. Vocal lines on this album belong more into death metal side of things being growled with occasional scream here and there. Songs like Neutron Star Company(NOVA) or Zeitgeist Vernichtung are sure to become your personal favorites. This is a superb blackened doom death opus.
Danas Rising are new band in the scene, hailing from Switzerland. This is their debut full length opus containing 6 songs. As for music, Danas Rising play rawer version of death doom metal with dual growling and screaming vocals, sometimes venturing into atmospheric clean melodic parts and thus creating hopeless, dark, almost touchable atmosphere of horror and void and fear. Songs are pretty long but they do not get boring at all. Of course, there are some prog and psychodelia influences of Celtic Frost sympho parts in Empire of Nature and punk rock simplicity even crust punk in Anarchist. My personal favorite is A Virus Called Humanity. Slow doom parts quickly evolves in some songs parts into death metal aggression and blasting beats back to mighty doom hits of the title song and dual screaming of Morgengrauen. This is a perfect soundtrack for a morning walk through musty, foggy and wet forest. Good death doom.
