(gig report)BAKTERIJE/ALERGIJA/FNC DIVERZANT/MOTORNO ULJE-Prostor Cakovec 09.03.2019.

March is a great month to start gigs and festival season after winter slumber and what better way to celebrate than our hometown boys´Bakterije 20th birthday and record number four release party.

Prostor was nicely full on  a Saturday evening with people all over Croatia attending this gig in our northern parts of country. People from Zadar, Zagreb, Varaždin, Koprivnica, Slovenia and many other places came because there were for awesome gigs on tonight´s line-up.

First one who started the party were MOTORNO ULJE, the heroes from our hometown dating back 20 years ago reforming just for this gig after playing their last gig approximately 6 years ago. Motorno Ulje play oi/streetpunk with lyrics about booze, drinking and then again some more booze. It was really nice to see all the young kids singing, pogoing and dancing to their songs, jumping on stage and singing along with singer Lazar. Motorno Ulje played 9 or 10 of their biggest hits like Radnički sendvič, Zadnja litra, Donesi dvije pive, Razbij staklo…and about 45  minutes passed quickly having much fun.

After the quick stage makeover, it was time for the guests from Zagreb, FNC DIVERZANT to step on the stage. This is another legendary punk band who played in our hometown first back in 1996.and I still remember that gig with a smile on my face. Now, 23  years later, the guys are finally releasing their new album soon and they played I think two new songs in their set tonight which sound great. I can´t wait for the new record to come out. Otherwise their set was old school material like Toga dana, Slobodan, Blizu sunca, Biba, Verbalni Delikt cover Stari Panksi and all the other kids from when we were kids. The people were singing along, dancing, moshing and the atmosphere was great during FNC Diverzant˙s 45 minute long set.

Unfortunately, or luckily, when you go to gigs like this, you meet a lot of people you don´t see very often, so you talk a bit here, a bit there and so I missed almost whole set of guests from Zadar, another old school streetpunk band ALERGIJA. I came back in like two or three songs prior to the end of their set, so I didn´t catch much. I still remember Alergija gigs back in the 90-ies, like Anti Playback legendary tour and stuff, but nowadays the incarnation of the band sounds awesome. I caught that Cock Sparrer cover Pijemo and two more songs before, but the people had fun, the atmosphere during their set was hot and great.

Finally, it was time for BAKTERIJE to enter the stage. The boys are about to release their new, fourth record and judging by what I heard at the gigs and online singles, the record is going to be a blast. Without too much talk, the first half of the set was made of new material with some oldie but goldie thrown in for good measure. It was nice when old vocalist Mario sang with the band couple of songs as a guest. There was dancing, singing, smiling and I did not see one face in the crowd that was not happy with the gig. That means another superb gig night in Prostor.

(gig report)Fakofbolan celebrated their 25th birthday in Unterhund!

Unterhund in Ormož, Slovenia was once again a place to be on a Saturday night.  After recent Slapshot gig which was awesome, it was time for another punk legends to step on the stage of this beautiful club.

Fakofbolan are now legendary punk band from Pula, Croatia. When I was a kid growing up in a time of war and darkness in the early nineties, their songs helped me carry on through all that shit and we were singing those songs during every birthday party bash, we were all we had back then, no internet, only fanzines and letters and record/tape trading.

Now, Fakofbolan are celebrating 25 years in the scene, okay they had a pause of couple of years in between, but who cares? We were in Unterhund when they played there back in 2012.and I still remember that show with a smile on my face, so I was happy to go there again, being near our hometown and it was Saturday night.

When we arrived, there were quite a few people talking, joking and drinking in front of the club and inside. Time quickly passed in good company and the gig started around 11 pm. The band which opened the gig was Orkester Selotejp from Slovenia. Those guys played some version of ska/rock/punk and their set was long, but they just weren´t my cup of tea, but the people had fun and that´s what is most important.

Fakofbolan stepped on stage, checked their instruments and without too many talk started their set, 25 songs for the 25 years of band. Their set was made of songs from all of their releases, the last album from 2014.that doesn´t suit me so well and all of the oldies but goldies like Ulica, Da li znaš, Ostali smo, Neznani junaci…The people were dancing, singing along and having fun, Šapo and company from the band were happy and the gig was superb. I was so happy when they played old songs like Imamo Hrvatsku and Ropstvo je sloboda. The time passed by in a flash and the gig was over, so we went home a bit tired, but happy after another great punk gig. Cheers and many, many thanks to the people of Unterhund for doing such a fine job with promoting great gigs.

(column) DAK Bambucha does a great job to keep the scene alive and Varaždin needs a club or gig space urgently!

DAK Bambucha is an association based in Varaždin, Croatia, whose goal is to promote underground and alternative culture and events. They organized tons of gigs in last two years and hosted many Croatian bands and foreign bands that came touring through our part of the country.

The burning problem for the town of Varaždin is that there is no club or alternative space where the gigs and other events could be held. By the way, Varaždin is beautiful baroque town in the north-northwest of Croatia and in the last 25 years of me being part of this scene, there was always a great scene there with bands like Ateisti, Potres mozga, Apfuken, Corpse Grinder, Directed crew and many others coming to mind immediately when I think of the 90-ies. I sang in band called Corewar in the second half of the 90-ies and I remember with smile superb gigs in Gracija, BKD Željezničar and Rogoz, not only with my band, but every Varaždin and Čakovec band played there at least once a month.

The 2000-s somehow brought status quo, Gajba crew tried to do something with couple of festivals on Drava river but in my opinion everything somehow stagnated until some new kids arrived on the scene backed by few of the older kids that survived in the scene from the 90-ies.

Nowadays, Varaždin again has a healthy and small, but compact scene with bands like BKD, Senf, Gemišt, Fajrunt, One Step Away(okay half of the band hehe) and Mališa Bahat being the most active ones right now. What I love about the scene here is that every kid comes to gig, no matter being punk, skinhead or metal  oriented and they somehow all hold each others backs.

DAK Bambucha was formed to help organize gigs, but the burning problem remains the place. In the Summer, the guys kept the scene alive by organizing DIY gigs in the backyards of the members´houses, the old farm house and similar. They did a couple of gigs in the caffe bars, but the owners of the bars were not to keen on punk hardcore gigs. So, the problem remains and the city mayor and politicians have absolutely no hearing for some freaks trying to revive and keep the flame of the scene burning.

So, how can this problem be solved? In my opinion it is about being loud, agitating, sharing, promoting, the hard work will in time be rewarded with some club or a space of some kind for organizing things.

This was not going to be gig report, but I have to write this one. Yesterday night the guys organized another nice successfull gig in nearby village called Sračinec in the Dom kulture(free translation from Croatian being Culture house) with four awesome bands playing. First, melodic punks Fajrunt from Varaždin warmed the crowd with their awesome songs from their two albums, backed with couple of covers by Mikrofonija and Ateisti. Bakterije from my hometown Čakovec were next. The kids went mad and the pogoed, moshed and singalongs were in order on the slippery tiles of the floor but everyone who fell down was quickly picked up by the other kids in the pit. Bakterije played the set of their hits from the first two albums mixed with three new songs from the forthcoming new album and the new stuff blew my head away live. The guests from Pula Antitodor led by legendary frontman Todor who is already 40 years in the scene were next. They changed their lineup again and I saw that they have a new drummer and the guy is really young, someone told me he is 17, but he plays his drum set better than many other older colleagues in the scene. Antitodor set was mixed with material from all four of their albums, with one Kud Idijoti cover thrown in and the kids enjoyed it from the first to the last minute. The last band to close the evening were Partleki from my hometown, in fact the two guys from Bakterije plus legendary ex Motorno Ulje frontman Lazar on bass and vocals. Partleki finished the great gig triumphantly with their set of punk covers of famous children songs haha.

So, what is the point and the conclusion of this feature? Help, solidify the ranks, agitate, share, everyone can do their part and we can all enjoy it all the way while doing the hard work for the scene. Remember, there is no global scene without your own local scene.
