(movie) The Sound Of Scars – Powerful Life Of Agony documentary!

I love Life Of Agony since I first heard their debut album River Runs Red back in 1994 or 1995 when my friend made me a tape from a cd he bought after we watched their video for Through And Through on Headbangers Ball and being young hardcore and metal kids who adored New York Hardcore we loved it immediately. I totally relate to that album to this day, being an ode to fighting depression and losing that fight making your run to freedom through suicide when all hope is lost. Then came Ugly which was superb sophomore album and Soul Searching Sun. Life Of Agony was always to me like a kind of mix between NYHC and more doomy melodic Type O Negative sound with singer Keith Caputo(now Mina Caputo) having charisma and that distinct voice like no other singer in the genre has.

Keith left the band and they got that dude from Ugly Kid Joe as singer and it was a disaster, at least in my eyes. But, they got back together and released more superb albums to this day, being stronger and more confident than ever. Now, LOA documented all those years of blood, tears and heartbreak, but also hope in this excellent movie that I enjoyed so much. The movie centers on friendship and brotherhood of three main men, singer Mina Caputo, guitarist and Mina´s cousin Joey Z, also Alan Robert bassist. Movie goes about how they started the band and when they were kids, all the broken home hardships, violence, drug abuse and growing up in Brooklyn, NY. Band was formed, through years of success and hope, downfall, depression, suicidal thoughts, Keith becoming Mina and breaking free of his inner demons, death, love and regret. At times, some parts of the movie made my heart broken, tears wet, some made me smile and having hope and being inspired. Besides LOA members, drummer Veronica Bellino who fits perfectly to the band although younger than Mina, Joey and Alan is featured in the movie, like some contemporaries and friends too, for example Billy Graziadei(Billybio, Biohazard, Powerflo), Doyle(Misfits, Doyle) and other people from the scene. This is inspiring movie and I recommend it to all fans and those who are not but will maybe become.

(MOVIE) oBSCENE EXTREME CURBY-THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF OBSCENE EXTREME

LOGO-film

Obscene Extreme Festival takes place in Trutnov, Czech Republic, for more than 20 years now. It started as a birthday bash party for one man, namely Curby, the man responsible for the organization of one of the best extreme music festivals in the world. This is a festival which has grindcore in the front and some crust and death metal added for good measure here and there in the line-up. Also, the festival grew big from one small diy festival every year, but still retaining that diy spirit and all visitors being one big happy family, how they say, freak friendly family. Through interviews with Curby himself, many band members and Curby˙s friends, from Bilos(Malignant Tumour), Jan(Agathocles), Barney (Napalm Death) and so on, we find out the amazing strength of will to keep the festival alive, beginnings in tape trading and sending letters vie post service, going to gigs, making friendships, still remaining fair priced vegan and extreme music freak friendly festival. I love the part when Curby explains how all members of this family work in Obscene Extreme, handling merch, helping and how every citizen of Trutnov got used and made friends with bunch of so called freaks and free people from around the world. I was never there, but after seeing this inspiring awesome documentary I might just go there.

“It’s hard to sum up the life of a band in an hour and a half,” explains vocalist and guitarist Justin Sane of politically-fueled punk rock band Anti-Flag. We started Anti-Flag out of a passion for punk rock with the belief that punk music had the power to change people’s lives and have a positive impact on the world. With this documentary, we hope people will see that while life may not be as straight forward as that idealistic philosophy, it isn’t so far from the truth either. Regardless of what others take from this film, for us the experience of looking back on the history of Anti-Flag – sometimes good, sometimes bad and sometimes unbelievable – leaves us grateful to have had the opportunity to live a very rare and at times extraordinary life as part of this punk rock band.”

Beyond Barricades: The Story of Anti-Flag is being presented by Alternative Press and will make its debut on October 3rd via Veeps. Tickets for the livestream can be purchased here.

With direction from Jon Nix, the film tells the story of political punk band Anti-Flag by diving into the world of punk rock and activism while shedding light on the trials and tribulations of playing politically charged music for over 25 years. An inspiring look at a group of musicians dedicating their lives to fighting for human rights through their songs and outreach. With their endless drive to help others, they put empathy over apathy and fight cynicism with optimism but find that things could go tragically wrong at any moment.

It features interviews with the band as well as contemporaries such as Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Billy Bragg, Tim McIlrath (Rise Against), Brian Baker (Bad Religion), Chris Cresswell (The Flatliners, Hot Water Music), Tom May and Greg Barnett (The Menzingers) and many more to help tell the story of a band whose drive to spread their message is truly unstoppable.

This is the second feature film produced by TurnStyle Films and Executive Producer Matthew Chojnacki (Scream, Queen! My Nightmare on Elm Street, 30 years of Garbage: The Garbage Pail Kids Story). TurnStyle Films co-produced Powerbomb, distributed by Indican Pictures earlier this year. They are currently in production on Don’t Fall In Love with Yourself, a documentary on Justin Pearson and the San Diego noise punk scene. The filmmakers and band members are available for interviews.

Beyond Barricades: The Story of Anti-Flag will make its debut on October 3, 2020 via Veeps.
