(review) Verikalpa – Tunturihauta (Scarlet Records)

It has been couple of months since this opus came out, but like they say in these Northern parts of Croatia, it is never too late for great music eh? Verikalpa are hailing from Finland and this is their third full length opus. Members of Verikalpa are playing or have been playing in Catamenia, Obsessive Art, Against All and many other, so they know how to make quality metal and write great songs. This one contains 11 songs of ‘troll beer drenched metal’ like Verikalpa say for themselves. It is basically a mixture of melodic black metal and folk metal with some death metal influenced parts here and there, sounding a bit like early Finntroll in couple of songs, but not polka metal, rather more straightforward metal, we can safely say that Verikalpa lean more on metal side of things than on folk. There are some harmonica and keyboard parts that are folk metal passages, but guitars are more often and they create such beautiful melancholic yet aggressive atmosphere and melody, like only Finnish bands can. Songs are all in Finnish, so I don´t understand a word but the music speaks for itself. Riitti, Tunturihauta, Verikauhu are my personal favorites on this opus, but I am glad that I discovered this band because I love the music they create.

(recka) The Mist from the Mountains – Monumental – The Temple of Twilight

Moji osobni favoriti na ovom albumu su A Paean to Fire, Master of Wilderness i After God. Vi pronađite svoje favorite. Finska, zemlja tisuću jezera i odličnih bendova i projekata.

(review) Shape of Despair – Return to the Void(Season of Mist)

Long time no doom metal to grace the pages of this zine. Now it is time to correct that, and what better way to do it than with new Shape of Despair record. Finns have been in the scene since 1998, even before that when there was a band called Raven. This band is featuring members and former members of Finnish bands such as Finntroll, Throes of Dawn, Impaled Nazarene, Tyrant, Barathrum…

What to expect on this record? This is band´s fifth full length and it has been seven years since the last album came out. This opus features six songs of despair, slow funeral doom with lots of atmospheric parts, melancholic melodies and sorrow mixed with partly aggression done in a way only Finnish bands can do it. Songs are long, with shortest being just under eight minutes but it does not get boring for a second. Quite the contrary, guitar work, synths and drums carry us to some other dark place, coupled with vocal interplay, courtesy of singers Henri and Natalie whose voices fit just perfectly in the whole picture. Death doom growls interwine with clean passages and melodic parts, emphasizing loneliness, misery, pain and futility of life itself. But, this record also gives hope. Why? Because, no matter how hard, hopeless it is, metal is still here and always will be.
