(column) Are we supporting our local scene enough?!

These writings are here because recently I had a few talks with couple of punks at some gigs who told me that they find really stupid to support some bands from some xy town in our country because they only support the bigger and better known bands and the little ones are stupid and who listens to their crappy music anyway?

I almost pissed myself from laughing hearing those little assholes say their shitty opinions. Why? Because, it is sooo stupid not supporting your local scene, local venues and local promoters, bands trying to keep up the diy spirit and underground scene. I mean, in your empty heads, don´t you think that Nofx, Bad Religion, Rancid and all the others didn´t start somewhere? If no one came to their gigs when they started playing in every little shithole they could book a gig and tour, would they grow so big? Of course not! So, the most important thing in the scene is supporting your local scene, because without it, there would not be any global scene.

QROrEsH

Don´t get me wrong, personaly I am not attending every gig and going to every show just because it is underground and just because I feel obliged to support it. That is not the case with me. With years that passed and me growing older, I go only to gigs that musically atract me or could atract me and I am for some reason interested with. That is okay by me. But, that prime spirit of underground is still within me, still I love to discover new awesome bands at the gigs, support them on tour, when no one came just because the gig is on Tuesday or Thursday haha. You can see the gig and not drink and you can work the next day without problems can´t you?

The next shit that annoys me are tickets. Almost every time someone complains that the ticket is too expensive and that the promoters are fucking capitalists earning money on poor punks´back and all that shit variations on the same theme. I mean, most of those assholes that are complaining are standing in front of the venue with 5 liter wine bottle, box of cigarettes smoking, drinking and talking shit. Hey dude, how come you had money for wine and cigarettes which usually costs the same or less than the ticket for your local show?! Change your priorities asshole!

In fanzines, at least in ours, we try to support underground bands, labels and remarkable individuals in the wonderful worldwide scene that are not well known, they do not have pr machines and strong big labels behind them. It means a lot to me, and I also know it means a lot to them too, seeing that someone appreciates their hard work with their band(s), labels, promoting and all that. One Bad Religion or Offspring couldn´t care less if they are featured in your zine or they are not. Some little band and label from the basement are happy and it means to them the world. I am not being a hypocrite here, as some would say, because our zine also features bigger bands and labels from time to time, that is how it goes. But basically, we will try and are trying and working hard every day to bring to light of day some bands that are not well known and famous. After all, for me underground and extreme music is digging around yourself and finding what you like, not only consuming what you get served on the plate.

So, do we support our local scene enough? I think, yes and no. Let everyone find the answer for themselves in their hearts.

(gig report)BAKTERIJE/ALERGIJA/FNC DIVERZANT/MOTORNO ULJE-Prostor Cakovec 09.03.2019.

March is a great month to start gigs and festival season after winter slumber and what better way to celebrate than our hometown boys´Bakterije 20th birthday and record number four release party.

Prostor was nicely full on  a Saturday evening with people all over Croatia attending this gig in our northern parts of country. People from Zadar, Zagreb, Varaždin, Koprivnica, Slovenia and many other places came because there were for awesome gigs on tonight´s line-up.

First one who started the party were MOTORNO ULJE, the heroes from our hometown dating back 20 years ago reforming just for this gig after playing their last gig approximately 6 years ago. Motorno Ulje play oi/streetpunk with lyrics about booze, drinking and then again some more booze. It was really nice to see all the young kids singing, pogoing and dancing to their songs, jumping on stage and singing along with singer Lazar. Motorno Ulje played 9 or 10 of their biggest hits like Radnički sendvič, Zadnja litra, Donesi dvije pive, Razbij staklo…and about 45  minutes passed quickly having much fun.

After the quick stage makeover, it was time for the guests from Zagreb, FNC DIVERZANT to step on the stage. This is another legendary punk band who played in our hometown first back in 1996.and I still remember that gig with a smile on my face. Now, 23  years later, the guys are finally releasing their new album soon and they played I think two new songs in their set tonight which sound great. I can´t wait for the new record to come out. Otherwise their set was old school material like Toga dana, Slobodan, Blizu sunca, Biba, Verbalni Delikt cover Stari Panksi and all the other kids from when we were kids. The people were singing along, dancing, moshing and the atmosphere was great during FNC Diverzant˙s 45 minute long set.

Unfortunately, or luckily, when you go to gigs like this, you meet a lot of people you don´t see very often, so you talk a bit here, a bit there and so I missed almost whole set of guests from Zadar, another old school streetpunk band ALERGIJA. I came back in like two or three songs prior to the end of their set, so I didn´t catch much. I still remember Alergija gigs back in the 90-ies, like Anti Playback legendary tour and stuff, but nowadays the incarnation of the band sounds awesome. I caught that Cock Sparrer cover Pijemo and two more songs before, but the people had fun, the atmosphere during their set was hot and great.

Finally, it was time for BAKTERIJE to enter the stage. The boys are about to release their new, fourth record and judging by what I heard at the gigs and online singles, the record is going to be a blast. Without too much talk, the first half of the set was made of new material with some oldie but goldie thrown in for good measure. It was nice when old vocalist Mario sang with the band couple of songs as a guest. There was dancing, singing, smiling and I did not see one face in the crowd that was not happy with the gig. That means another superb gig night in Prostor.

(photo gig report)Mad Caddies return to Slovenia, this time at Cvetličarna, Ljubljana!

After a great gig at last year´s Punk Rock Holiday, Mad Caddies returned to Europe, this time in Cvetličarna, Ljubljana, Slovenia. They are supported with Jon Gazi and Rude Tins.

Of course, our sister Irina was there to witness the great gig of one of her favorite bands and also deliver in Kraykulla Webzine this fine photo gig report.
